SOLVED: Adult Fiction > SOLVED. Horror fantasy set in Scotland. Title is something like The Grey Man of Ben Macdui. Main character is MacAllister who lived near the mountain and went up it, encountering the legendary Grey Man (kind of a Bigfoot?). Spoiler ahead. [s]

Chris Ward (chriswardfictionwriter) | 9 comments I just stumbled across this group at random, and wondered if you could help me find two books I read as a kid that I would love to reread again sometime. I've searched and searched but can't find them anywhere.

The first was a kind of horror fantasy story set in Scotland. The title, as best as I remember it was The Grey Man of Ben Macdui, yet when I search for that all I get is a non-fiction book about the real life legend. This was a novel, and the main character was called MacAllister. He lived near the mountain, and for some reason ended up going up there and encountering the legendary Grey Man (kind of a Bigfoot, I think). All I really remember is that he had a dog which died at the end saving him from the Grey Man.

The second was a kind of comedy ghost adventure. I remember it had pictures. A group of students (I think) went camping in the woods and had some adventures. I remember there was a mystery element about an asp which was in a fake boot. I specifically remember it was an asp, because I had no clue what one was until I read this book, finding out it was some kind of small, poisonous snake. I read it three or four times, but that's about all I can remember. It had a title something like The Ghost Rescue, but I could be mistaken.

I read both these books around 1990, when I was coming to the end of primary school (I'm British). I borrowed both from the school library.

Who knows if these books are as good as I remember, but I've always wished to have another look at them, so if anyone has any info, I'd love to know.

Thanks in advance!
Chris

Chris, please separate this into two requests, one book per request. Otherwise it is way too confusing.

As requested in the group description, please put genre and plot details in your header which helps the people searching for your books.

Chris, I added a plot description for your first book to the topic header; feel free to edit it. Please edit message #1 to remove the description of the second book from this thread.

The Haunted Mountain: A Story of Suspense by Mollie Hunter seems to match your description.

One Goodreads reviewer says, "Ben MacDhui...provide[s] an excellent backdrop which proves integral to the story." "...the stubborn but charming MacAllister [defies tradition and angers the local spirits (the sidhe) by his pride and stubbornness], his lovely red-haired wife Peigi-Ann who has the faithfulness of Penelope, their equally stubborn son Fergus and the dimwitted but well-meaning farmhand Murdo. The Skeelie Woman, with one foot in the world of humans and the other in the world of Faerie, provides a unique perspective. And the faithful dog Colm proves his loyalty and worth..."

Chris Ward (chriswardfictionwriter) | 9 comments (apologies if this post is a duplicate, the first one seemed to disappear before I pressed post)

Ayshe, Kris - thanks! That sounds exactly like it. No idea how I muddled the title over the years, but I was way off with what I remember. Looking at the reviews, that's definitely the book.

Kris - thanks for the edit. I had no idea what I was doing eh.

Lobstergirl - thanks, I'll close this one down and add a new one for the second book. Sorry!

Thanks again!
Chris
