S. Trust | 17 comments So as an indie writer I'm struggling with exposure and thought that I'm not the only one struggling out there. I'm thinking of starting an online publishing magazine with a friend to help tackle this issue. Before I go on with that I need to know what are the top 3 things you would hope to achieve from publishing with such a company. Here are mine:

1)Exposure to a wider audience
2)Knowing what other authors are writing about
3)General feedback on stories

So far the solution I came up with was a series of flash fiction stories (500 to 5,000 words) in which people could quickly read through, rate and perhaps visit a link to the authors page or website.

Ok so tell us more like frequency etc

I also think you need to focus on a specific genre. I'm on one that does fantasy/sci-fi. They have a couple of editors and graphics people, so you'll need to consider if that is something you want to get into.

Well, for now we're testing the feasibility of the idea among writers and readers. Depending on what we figure out from the readers, we'll adjust the frequency. For launch we will probably look towards 50-100 pieces. My guess would be quarterly or monthly, again it all depends on the demand. If we can manage a higher frequency we'll scale accordingly.

We ideally want a wide range of readers and writers, it's all about exposure. We believe that there are readers who don't mind exploring different genres and there are others, myself included, who read all genres. Theoretically if we have a large enough story database it should not be an issue, but of course you're right. To start with it is generally considered the norm to focus.

Agree to make it varied....would you put it on your website or would you have a website just for that. maybe we could have blurbs, synopses, reviews etc

An independent channel solely for that purpose alone and have it link to the authors' websites if the reader is interested, maybe a hyperlink under the name or the title of the story.

Sherri Moorer (sherrithewriter) | 0 comments I meant to add, I'd be interested in contributing to it. I write sci- fi & mystery/suspense. I like flash fiction but have a hard time finding places to read or publish it.

Then if you don't mind I'll reach out to you if and when we decide to proceed. In which online medium would you prefer to read flash fiction?

Mary Ellen Woods (maryellen_woods) | 48 comments I think this is a great idea. My 3 would be:
1) exposure to a wider audience
2) feedback on my writing
3) finding fellow authors in my genre to network with

I write contemporary military romance and historical fiction/romance. I like doing flash fiction and wouldn't mind contributing.

Depending on the frequency you might have days that feature certain genres and then others that are open genre just to mix things up.

That's a very good way to structure it, featuring genres depending on day, week or month. Friday Fiction does have a nice ring to it.

Mary Ellen Woods (maryellen_woods) | 48 comments How about...Mystery Monday, Sci-Fi Saturday, Steampunk Sunday, Women's Wednesdays (feature women author's from all genres but then you might have to make Monday Men's Monday...lol), Wild Wednesday (any genre) or that could be Total Tuesday, Romance Thursday, I can do this all day...

I'll probably get back to you about the names when we get to it :)

I think this is a great idea! I like ideas 1 and 3. I would also include something for the different genre's.

Devorah Fox (devorahfox) | 22 comments I would be interested. So might a friend who is an ace flash-fiction writer.

Michele | 5 comments Sounds interesting! I think if you had a topic to give your contributors some structure, that would be successful.

Are you planning on a weekly or more frequency? Consider what you'll need to do to beef up your content at the start, until you get enough submissions.

Cheers!

message 22: by Alan (new)

Alan (aguffywrites) | 1 comments This is a fantastic idea! I'd absolutely send in submissions. I agree I think having some thematic structure would be helpful to readers, though what that looks like will probably depend upon what type of submissions you get, at least at first. Once you get a feel for what people are sending you, you can better decide if certain topics warrant a whole issue or not.
