Squanchers Sabriel was sooo good. I had no idea about it until the book reading with Garth Nix in Austin where I read across the wall. After falling in love with that book, I started reading Sabriel-the story of a girl who can rescue dead people from really dying or making them really die before an evil wizard thing comes and uses them. :(

Tate Oh! I love that book! So I am necromancing this discussion (punny!) because Sabriel is such an awesome book. Yeah!

John almondsecret What an amazing book Period

Olin who is your fav charecter?

Lainey Kennedy Tammy wrote: "LOVED this book and Lirael and Abhorsen! Wondering if Nix's other books could be this good..."

Tammy- One of my absolute favorites by him is The Ragwitch. Aimed at a little younger audience but the characters are great!

Hina I've read two Garth Nix books, Mister Monday and Sabriel and I think Sabriel was more enjoyable. It is a brilliant book and the detail that went into it is amazing.

Nina {ᴡᴏʀᴅs ᴀɴᴅ ᴡᴀᴛᴇʀ} The Keys to the Kingdom series - the Mister Monday series is good, even if its aimed at an audience a little younger. Still an amazing series though. The Ragwitch is good. Sabriel is probably my favourite of all Garth Nix's book, and I've read a good few. His fantasy settings are done really well.

Melissa Jensen Sabriel and the series that goes with it is by far his best work. Those novels are amazing and the way he changes characters is so fluid and natural. I read these when I was in my teens and I still love to read them today.

Hina I haven't read any of the other books after Sabriel and I hope they are just as good.

Henna Sabriel,Lireal and Abhorsen are amazing!! I think another really good book by Garth Nix is Shade's Children.

I agree.

Irene I am only on the second Abhorsen book and it is as good if not better than the first so far.

Irene How many in the Abhorsen series are there?

Irene Thanks!

Asterios I really liked Sabriel. It felt fresh, and I loved the way necromancy worked. Unfortunately the second book kinda ruined the whole experience and reading lirael's "I don't belong in this place" story was awkward and boring. The third book was better than the second, but it felt like a rehash of the first one. I suppose Sabriel was the "original" story and Lirael and Abhorsen just an attempt to get extra money. They aren't bad books per se, but they come up short when compared to Sabriel.

Celeste Simone I loved getting wrapped up in this book! I thought the details in the way she used the bells for necromancy was genius.

Micah All of the next books are just as excellent... The audio book with Tim Curry just makes it all the better

Absolutely. Tim Curry's voice is like really rich chocolate.

I liked the 2nd book best with all the exploring of the old library in the company of the Disreputatble Dog.

And that one short story in Across the Wall can be considered a part of the series with the return of Nicholas to the Old Kingdom.

Marion Sipe There's an audio book with Tim Curry? *dies of the awesome*

I liked Lirael (2nd book) best, too, but I loved all the books. Nix is a very talented author and he has a wonderful way with description. Across the Wall is currently sitting on my night table, waiting for me to have time for it!

Did you know he's writing another book -- Clariel, the Lost Abhorsen? It's going to be about Clariel, the Abhorsen who became Clohrr of the Mask. :) SO EXCITED.

Marion Sipe Awesome! I would love to know more about her!

Now that would be good! I'm loving this series.

Corinne I really loved this book but to be honest I liked the sequels a lot better. This triolgy was what got me to start reading novels a lot more. I will always have a fond memory of reading them.

Jacquelyn One of my favorite books! I loved Sabriel and Abhorsen a lot! I did like Lirael but I liked the first and third ones better. I'm always a sucker for the first third and last books for some reason. I can't wait to reread it!

Don't forget there are other Old Kingdom stories!

1.The Creature in the Case appeared in novella form for a World Book Day a few years ago, and is also in the Across the Wall A Tale of the Abhorsen and Other Stories collection.

2. "An Extract of the Journal of Idrach the Lesser Necromancer" was released on oldkingdom.com.au in 2009, and you can read it here: http://www.oldkingdom.com.au/gates.html
I haven't got round to reading it in full yet.

3. To Hold the Bridge was released in an anthology titled Legends of Australian Fantasy, edited by Jack Dann and Jonathan Strahan, though again I haven't seen this yet.

4. Most exciting of all is this note from his website:
"I’m writing Clariel: the lost Abhorsen at the moment. It is set about 300 years before the events of Sabriel, in an extremely settled era of the Old Kingdom, where is almost no threat from the Dead or Free Magic, and the Abhorsens are considered something between an archaic remnant of worse times and municipal rat-catchers. Clariel will probably be a 2013 release."

So, more Old Kingdom to enjoy!

Christine Loved it. Definately on my "multiple times read" list.

Yes, I knew there were other stories and I may read them after rereading the trilogy, but thank you for showing them to me! :)

Alesha Escobar The book is amazing (so glad I was introduced to it)! I loved the concept of the Abhorsen, his/her role, and of course, the characters and circumstances Sabriel encounters.

Casey I remember reading these books in high school and loving them. Sadly they were destroyed due to a leaky roof. I think I will have to invest in them and reread them! Been so long since I slipped into that world...
