message 1: by Robert (new)

Robert Dallmann (robert_dallmann) | 1605 comments Jesus promised to give us REST... but some teach that Jesus FAILED...

Matthew 11:28 - "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I WILL GIVE YOU REST."

Hebrews 4:8 (KJV) - "For IF JESUS HAD GIVEN THEM REST, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day."

Hebrews 4:8 (ESV) - "For IF JOSHUA HAD GIVEN THEM REST, God would not have spoken of another day later on."
__

Observations:

* Jesus promised to give His followers REST
* The KJV translation teaches that JESUS FAILED to give this REST
* The ESV translation teaches that JOSHUA FAILED to give this REST

So who FAILED?

Rod Horncastle Good challenge Robert.

Define REST? My soul is very much at rest --/ it's this physical reality that is exhausting.

Was Joshua's rest literal? Was Jesus rest spiritual? Or both?

Robert Dallmann (robert_dallmann) | 1605 comments Here is my take on the Sabbath Rest that Jesus has given us...

Galatians 2:20 - "I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me..."

If I am dead and it is not I, but Jesus Who is living in me... how much more REST can I get? How much more can I CEASE from MY works?

Hebrews 4:10 - "for whoever HAS ENTERED God's rest HAS also RESTED FROM HIS WORKS as God did from his."

message 4: by Ray (new)

Ray Geide (breakthroughversion) | 5 comments In Hebrew and Greek, Jesus and Joshua are the same. They are one word.
Hebrews 4:8 is talking about Joshua. There is no question about that if you look at the context. Please read the whole chapter and follow the argument.
The point being made is that if the children of Israel had received rest when they entered into the promised land under Joshua, David would not have later talked about still entering into God's rest (Hebrews 4:5) in Psalms. The rest comes by trusting God's Son.
Here is a literal translation of Hebrews 4:8 - You see, if Joshua gave them rest, David would not be speaking about another day after those days. (Breakthrough Version)

Amen Ray. Clearly Jesus is NOT the failure. The context of Hebrews chapter 4 is inclusive of the fulfillment of the promised Sabbath Rest.

* Verse 4 speaks of the Creation Sabbath...
* Verse 10 confirms this reminding us of how God rested from His work

Jesus Himself IS our Sabbath Rest.

I did a brief Bible study on this topic (one page, double sided, tri-fold). Here is the link to the free PDF file if anyone is interested:
