Constance Buchanan | 19 comments So I got my friend to read my work a couple of weeks back and she says although it's fine, my writing style reminds her of Sylvia Plath's...should I be worried about this? I've never actually read much of Plath's to be honest and only recently have I read the Bell Jar...but will publishers try and think I'm imitating her? I don't think I've ever changed my writing style at all, but isn't it normal for two writers to have a similar style?

Is this work your first? Are you new or newish to writing? I ask because when one begins a new type of art they may often copy, intentionally or not, more established artists in that field. They may often, by mere chance of life circumstances, be similar to other artists.

This is true of all art, not only writing. Actually, it may help to write in the style of an established writer because publishers know that the writer's work will sell. I'm not sure about Sylvia Plath, though. She's not contemporary, so your styles being similar may not matter.

In short, yeah your situation is normal.
