Jackie | 13 comments Hey all! Hoping someone can help me figure out the name of a book i read (sometime within the past year).

A guy moves to a small town and meets a woman who was the sole survivor of a tragic accident as a child when a bridge in her small town collapsed. Everyone in the town lost someone in the collapse, and she lost her family. The town seems to treat her as if they hold her responsible for the tragedy because they are angry that she survived and their loved one didn't, even though they know she had nothing to do with causing it and that she herself was a victim. At one point, an older man in gives the Hero a "friendly warning" to steer clear of her because she is bad news, and the Hero calls him out asking for specific reasons she is seen as bad news When he can't give any reasons, the hero tells him that his and the whole towns aversion to her is ridiculous because she lost everything in the accident too.

That's pretty much all i can remember, and when i search for it all that really comes up is Instant Attraction by Jill Shalvis, which is not it. Hopefully this will be familiar to someone! Thanks in advance!

Jackie is still looking for this. From the other thread:

"Investigation/Protection Small Town Romance- Heroine is Town Pariah After Surviving Town Tragedy As A Child- Hero is Investigating Who is Sabotaging/Attacking Her.

I'm trying to find a book i read about 1.5-2 years ago about a woman who, at 8 years old, was the sole (or one of the only) survivors of either a bridge collapse or a major accident on a bridge in a small town. Pretty much everyone in her town lost someone that day, and she lost multiple family members. Now she is an adult and the whole town has always resented her for surviving while their loved ones didn't. She is working on fixing up her home and someone is either sabotaging her progress or trying to hurt her (i can't remember specifically what is being done to her) so she hires an investigation agency. They send a man out to investigate who is behind everything, and in order to keep the townspeople from shunning him because he is associated with her they use the excuse that he is just her contractor working on the house. He goes into the diner in town and is warned to stay away from the girl because she's 'bad news' or 'cursed' but no matter how many times he asks, no one can give him a specific reason other than the fact that she is alive when she should have died with everyone else.

I'm pretty sure this is a book in a series (possibly about a security/ investigation agency but not necessarily) and it is the 2nd or 3rd book because at one point the Hero's coworkers (who may also be his brothers, or just very close friends who consider each other brothers) call him and can tell he is falling in love with the heroine and they say something along the lines of solving the case so he can bring home their new 'sister-in-law', referring to the heroine. Even though i can't remember the previous books about the Hero's 'brothers' i do know that i was familiar with them and their stories, so they must have had books that came before this one.

I hope someone can help me out- this has been driving me nuts for a better part of a year now! Thanks in advance!"

Olivia | 4 comments The train accident part of this description reminds me of Housekeeping by Marilynne Robinson, but I don't think it fits with the security/investigation part of the description. However, I think Marilynne Robinson weaves the characters/content of her books together, so who knows :)

Jackie is still looking for this and wrote:

"read a book (ebook) sometime in either late 2015 or 2016 about a woman who is the most hated person in her town because everyone resents that she survived a tragedy/accident when she was a kid that killed many other people from the town.

I'm pretty sure she is trying to make repairs on her house to finally sell it and move away. People in town harass her and the local police turn a blind eye pretty much. I'm not sure if she hires security or a bodyguard, or how the Hero ended up staying with her to protect her/help her fix up the house to sell, but he's not from the town, and doesn't understand their backwards thinking by treating her like she did something wrong by not dying. He eventually sticks up for her to them when he's had enough of their bull (i think they may be in a diner when this happens) and basically tells them that they wanted something/someone to blame for their loved ones dying, and chose her because she was the most convenient person, even though they all knew that she was obviously not the cause of this tragedy and that she was a victim too. One of the most vocal towns person throughout the story reveals that his sister (or some other close relative) died and it wasn't fair that she died while the heroine lived.

The tragedy was some kind of natural disaster or accident or explosion type tragedy, NOT some kind of serial killer or criminal. I'm pretty sure at the end of the story she sells the house and moves "home" with the Hero for a HEA."

Jackie, bookmark this thread so you don't lose it.

You could get booted from the group for starting multiple threads for the same book after you have already been warned twice.

I'm sorry, i made that first post 3 years ago and the second 2 years ago, so i totally and completely forgot and would not have made a new thread yesterday had i remembered being warned against it. I guess i assumed that threads get deleted after a certain period of time, because they usually delete them after a while on some other sites i've posted on. But i assure you i will make sure not to make the same mistake again! Thank you for the warning and not just booting me, i do very much appreciate it and truly did not realize i was causing an issue.

SamSpayedPI | 2308 comments Nope; we've had threads solved here after ten years or more!

No threads are deleted, even if the OP abandons them; they just get moved to the "abandoned" folder, and the OP can resurrect them if they come back and say they're still interested in finding the book.

You should "bump" your thread every so often (30 days or more) so fresh eyes can see it.

Just recapping. Jackie, is this what you remember - "some kind of natural disaster or accident or explosion type tragedy", not necessarily a bridge collapsing? It's the 2nd/3rd book of a series that might feature a security/investigation agency and she's someone's sister-in-law?

What is the heroine's job/skills/employer?

Yes to everything except for the sister in law part. The H's brother refers to her as "my new sister" or something along the lines when telling the H to wrap it up and bring her home. As for the tragedy part, i remember it being a bridge collapse (fictional, not based on anything that has happened in real life in the past) but can't find the book when searching for books with bridge collapses in it, and that is such a specific thing i'd figure it would make it easier to find.

I think the h is an author, or works on websites or something online because she is able to work from home, and doesn't have a destination in mind to move to when she sells the house they are fixing up.

Why do people blame her as she was an eight year old child? Where was she and what was she doing during the disaster?

What caused the town's bridge to collapse? Was anyone else blamed?

People don't actually blame her, they just act like she is to blame because they actually resent her for surviving while so many of their loved ones died in the tragedy. I'm pretty sure she was also in the bridge collapse and that she was the only person who actually survived it. It turned out that the collapse was because of bad steel or metal or whatever it was made of.

I think the bridge collapse wasn't the main focal point of the book, but rather the catalyst that caused everything. Her surviving caused the town to resent her, and when she is older and fixing up her house to sell so she can finally leave the town, it's why people are messing with her and her property, because they just don't like her. I think i remember that at one point, some townspeople start a fire on her front lawn and her and the H see them driving off, and when they put the fire out she says something like "Why don't they understand that if they just let me be and stop screwing things up, i can sell the house and be out of their hair quicker'
