I read this in middle school for required reading and HATED it. Curious if I'd like it more now, but it's one I'm not looking forward to trying-so who knows if I ever will...
How I wish I could read Tolkein for the first time, all over again. As it is, I've probably read my way through the trilogy 3 or 4 times. There are lots of imitators out there, but there's only one Middle Earth.
I read this book about 1 1/2 years ago in honor of a friend of mine who had passed and loved Tolkien. I absolutely loved it. And I plan to read the Lord of the Rings.....at some point.
I was 9 years old when I first read Lord of the Rings, which I enjoyed so much more than The Hobbit. Since then I've re-read both many times, and Silmarillion 3 times. Tolkien was my first foray into adult fantasy and he hooked me for good. (My first fantasy books were Wizard of Oz and Alice in Wonderland.)

I didn't get to LOTR until I was about 19, even though I got it when I was in grade 5. I am not sure what took me so long since I read long books and scifi, etc, but that's how it went. I think I read it and Gormenghast at about the same time in my life.
I first read it when I was in high school. I learned the rune alphabet and taught my girlfriends ... we'd write notes to each other using runes so other people didn't know what we were saying.
I received a copy as a gift, I think, in 4th grade, and have read it probably 25 times, including to my sister, brother and kids (when they were all small.) I waited until college to read the trilogy, on purpose, because I wanted to fully understand and appreciate it. I've read Lord of the Rings at least five times since. It's funny, because I'm not a huge fan of world-building SFF, but I would visit Middle Earth anytime!
When I was younger, I only liked The Hobbit and LOTR. It wasn't until I was older and listened to a really fascinating audiolecture about Tolkien and his works, that I reread the books and found out that I loved them. I now read them about once a year. (The lecture is The Modern Scholar on fantasy literature, and the professor is Michael D.C. Drout, in case you're interested)

Also simpler than my daughters who have each made up their own alphabet for private writing. What's more, my younger daughter purposely misspells almost every word so we can't possibly crack it if we were to try. Perhaps an expert cryptographer could, but we aren't that or even close.

One of them also had a poster of Orlando Bloom as Legolas on the ceiling above her bed.

“Why, O, why did I ever leave my hobbit-hole!”
My first time reading The Hobbit and my first Tolkien, I enjoyed them both. What an imaginative story. I tried to read this book to my son when he was in elementary school but he was not interested, I could not get past the first page. I am glad that I decided to finally read it on my own. I did see the movies when they came out so I had a visual reference as I was reading. Overall I liked Bilbo Baggins and the host of characters he comes in contact with. It was a fun adventure and I look forward to continuing with the series this summer with Lord of the Rings.
