This quote really stuck with me. I'd heard it before, and reading this, it really made sense.

"Plenty of humans were monstrous, and plenty of monsters knew how to play at being human."

On second thought, I feel that my topic title is a bit pretentious, but let's go with it.

My thoughts while reading this book:

-Holy crap, these people are fucking twisted, but I still don't think they're bad people, what is wrong with me??

-Victor totally wants to bang Eli. I spoke too soon. He hates his guts.

-Eli genuinely cares about Victor. Maybe there's still hope for them. Nope. Never mind. He hates HIS guts.

-Mitch is the true hero of this book. Leave him alone, he's just a baby! *hands carton of chocolate milk to Mitch and hugs him tight*

-SYDNEY I LOVE YOU CAN I BE THE PRESIDENT OF YOUR FAN CLUB?? YES? OKAY SWEET CAN I HAVE YOUR AUTOGRAPH?

-Serena is so funny, but damn that bitch is crazy. And mean. She gots to go. Oh good, she did go. Now take Eli with you.

-That ending smile. Vic, you wicked thing, what have you planned next?

Anyway, here's my actual discussion. EOs (ExtraOrdinaries) were an interesting idea. I liked the science behind it. Eli and Vic were both pure geniuses. I actually found the whole thing believable. I'm sure I'm not the first making this comparison, but X-Men, am I right?

Victor Vale really knew how to win me over. I was hesitant at first because I thought he was the crazy one. And he was crazy to an extent, but that was the fun about him. The whole process he had of marking out words with a Sharpie was kind of adorable in a way. Compulsive and adorable. I felt bad for him because yeah, he had absent parents. But oddly enough, he didn't really rebel. I feel like his bad behavior was solely due to Eli, not his parents. Maybe I'm wrong.

Supervillains are fucking awesome. I usually stick to liking plain villains. You know, those guys with guns who like to kill things and have really good aim? Yeah, but they don't have these cool superpowers. I'm not a huge superhero fan, other than watching some Marvel movies, particularly Iron Man, Hulk, and SpiderMan. I couldn't care less about the others. But the supervillains never really drew my attention. I think this book changed that about me. I was hooked from that torture scene between Victor and Eli, the first one that is.

At first, I had some issues with this book. Don't get me wrong, the characters pulled me in from the start, but there was still something that bothered me.

As the story moved on, I realized how emotionally invested I had become. Victor became my favorite character, and I found myself rooting for him and his team. Sydney was amazing, and I think her power was my favorite. I loved that she had Dol as her sidekick. The dynamic between Sydney and Victor was my favorite. Mitch and his chocolate milk (yes, the milk is a character in my mind) were both amazing. Eli was such a complex character that I fell for him, too. He was literally twisted and consumed by his insanity. But ultimately, it was all about Victor for me.

Serena was great. I liked it when she was called a siren. She made me laugh during her first interactions with Eli. She was bold and fearless.

That's another thing that I appreciated about this book. There were strong female characters, even though some were defeated. I liked the strong presence of women, and their show of power, although wicked at times.

A lot of my issues had to do with the writing. I adore the author, and I think she's brilliant. But sometimes the prose felt a bit pretentious, there was a lot more told than shown, which felt more like a summary. The flashbacks took some getting used to, but near the end I enjoyed them.

Despite my problems with this book, I loved it. It sucked me in and I didn't want to ever leave the world. I now consider this one of my favorite books because the characters were so incredible, and I do love a couple of "good" villains.
