Addy | 5111 comments Ok, so its Addy, Ken, Natasa?, and K4tie. Anyone feel free to join if you so desire:)

I'm gonna start on Monday and of course use spoiler tags. With that said, I wanna know if anyone has seen Nightbreed which is based on this book (I had no idea)? Heard it was a flop, but id like to see it anyway as its a cult classic now. Any thoughts without revealing any spoilers?

Kenneth McKinley | 1717 comments Mod
It came out in 1990 and I remember being excited to see it as a kid because I had just seen Barker's Hellraiser and that blew me away. Unfortunately, I was kind of lukewarm to Nightbreed. It wasn't bad. But, it came off as more Adams Family-kind of cartoonish rather than scary.

K4tie (nonzombieleader) | 484 comments I think I'll watch Nightbreed and let you know. I loved Hellraiser when it came out, little dated now, but still a very interesting tale that I had to own.

It sounds like I should probably not take Nightbreed too seriously though. Dang technology making it hard to watch older movies!

message 4: by Addy (new) - added it

Addy | 5111 comments Yeah, the poster I saw looked silly-ish. I heard Clive was upset about it. I've actually never seen any of his movies. Always thought they were too scary...lol. The only CB book I've read is The Thief of Always which was gonna be a movie but then never came to fruition. I was kinda mad about that. I have quite a few of his books now, so I might keep this thread open for other barker reads.

K4tie (nonzombieleader) | 484 comments Awesome, I would not oppose, I've been meaning to explore Clive's work but never have. I too have quite a few. I kept getting them and thinking... Sometime in the future...

Addy | 5111 comments Im trying to collect the Book of Bloods. I have 2 so far that I've found. I love the quote, "Everybody is a book of blood; Wherever we're opened, we're red." So clever.

message 7: by K4tie (new) - added it

K4tie (nonzombieleader) | 484 comments Ohh that is a nice quote. :) I have 1-6. I can share if you want them.

Kenneth McKinley | 1717 comments Mod
Books of Blood are my favorite works of Barker. I still have the original paperbacks from the 1980s

message 9: by Addy (new) - added it

Addy | 5111 comments Maybe later K4tie. Its good to know u have them:) I really enjoyed volume 1, especially Pig Blood Blues.

Patrick Rutigliano | 137 comments I think you guys will enjoy Cabal. It's a pretty good example of Barker's work. If you're new to his stuff, I'd also recommend The Hellbound Heart, Weaveworld, and The Great and Secret Show. Or The Thief of Always if you're more into YA.

As to Nightbreed ... it's an interesting movie. The way Barker pitched it at the time was a film where the monsters are the heroes ... which the film industry had no idea how to handle. There's some pretty good makeup work and ideas in there (and Cronenberg is decent in it), but it has some tonal issues. There's one guy who pretty much exists to say cheesy one-liners who always takes me out of things when he's in a scene.

Cabal is a much, much better take on the same premise/characters.

Natasa (natasa79) | 353 comments This will be my first CB read...but I managed to get hold of quite a few of his books and some are on my 2014 horror challenge list (where I put 40 books in June lol, kind of have a feeling I won't make it as I keep on reading other books! I'll add Cabal though instead of something else).

I'm ashamed to say that I'm very uneducated as regards to TV, movies and TV shows. I never ever watched TV, not even too many cartoons. As soon as I started reading, I never stopped. Maybe one of the factors was also that I was growing up alone in another time and place...not to bother with details.

My boyfriend though totally showed me that watching TV shows and movies can be really good. So the last 7 years with him I've managed to pick up but I'll never be knowledgeable about the older stuff...these are the places where I also pick up movie recs and I try to jot them down. I've already proposed to my bf we watch some of the old horrors but damn, I know exactly what you mean Katie, this new technology makes old stuff and those effects looks cheesy. He'll probably loose interest straight away so I'll probably have to do it on my own...and since I read more and have no habit of watching anything...damn, too bad some of you are not closer :) movies can be watched together unlike books (with the exception of audio books)

K4tie (nonzombieleader) | 484 comments Books are almost always better than the movie. It's impossible to take almost anything and slap Hollywood on it in any way shape or form and not foul it up a little bit. Cut corners on important parts of the story (which are debatable), skimp on costume, hire no name actors with little experience, have a budget that wouldn't accomplish a small town fire display... Voila shitty movie city.

But... All that being said... If there is a real story to tell even all that can't mess it up completely.

K4tie (nonzombieleader) | 484 comments You can do amazing things with the internet. Movies can be watched at the same time while chatting. It's distracting, but also a load of fun because sharing the experience. I would say the hardest part would be either being in different time zones or not actually having a copy of the movie. If you want to watch horror movies (good bad or otherwise) I am down. I make no promises not to make wise cracks when they are needed, some movies need a little help! :)

message 14: by Addy (new) - added it

Addy | 5111 comments Nicely put!

message 15: by Addy (new) - added it

Addy | 5111 comments So how do u do the movie thing? There a certain website or wud u just chat back and forth on a thread?

message 16: by Patrick (last edited Jun 15, 2014 09:09PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Patrick Rutigliano | 137 comments Adapting anything from one medium to another is extremely difficult and takes a lot of talent to do well. But there are examples where the movie version of something actually becomes more iconic than the book it's based on (The Maltese Falcon, Jurassic Park, Jaws, etc.).

As to effects ... I'm actually kind of the opposite. CG always looks incredibly fake to me when it's in my face, and I'll always go with good practical effects whenever possible for a horror movie (since you haven't seen a lot of films, you might want to check out The Thing (1982), which is the king of practical effect horror movies and just a damn effective film overall). The two can blend together very nicely in the right hands, though.

message 17: by K4tie (new) - added it

K4tie (nonzombieleader) | 484 comments Chat from a thread while watching the movie. Yahoo, msn, gmail, skype, Facebook messenger - whatever works.

It's extra nice when the show / movie is on Netflix or Amazon instant video.

message 18: by Addy (new) - added it

Addy | 5111 comments Wow, that would be cool. I have Netflix and checked for nightbreed. Not available. I checked for child's play recently because it was on tv, but didn't want kids to watch it, not available:( I have to say that the special effects on Childs play were cheesy, but was still able to hold the creep factor. I was never allowed to watch these old school horror movies, but they all seem to be not on Netflix.

Natasa (natasa79) | 353 comments That's a cool idea Katie! I always comment during the movie and usually I pause and my boyfriend fumes cause of it lol! I know it's annoying but I so much want to make a comment on that scene lol (either good, bad, make fun of it etc)

Sadly no Netflix here and Amazon hmm I don't even buy ebooks cause I have no CC...I do everything through torrents and used to watch movies or newest TV shows (that were not available through torrents yet did that with Hannibal this season) but usually these online sites drive me crazy and destroy my watching experience because the sound quality is bad and my internet connection sucks...sometimes I have to upload the movie in advance so that I can watch it without breaks...so no more experiments, just torrents!

message 20: by K4tie (new) - added it

K4tie (nonzombieleader) | 484 comments If you have the movie then it doesn't have to be on Amazon or Netflix and as long as you aren't trying to sell it, then that's ok. That works too. :)

Nightbreed is on YouTube...

Natasa (natasa79) | 353 comments Hi guys, got the book from K4tie, so I'm gonna start soon (I've got so many books reading at the moment this month - and I never ever do that, so I'm a bit confused, trying to finish of some before starting a new one).
But I'm definitely reading this one with you, especially as I want to read this author and this will be my first book of his :)
How do you like it Addy so far?

message 28: by Addy (new) - added it

Addy | 5111 comments Im liking it well enough. The nightbreed and their laws are very interesting.

Kenneth McKinley | 1717 comments Mod
12% in tonight and I'm liking how this starting off.

Me 2! I've gotten rid of most of my paper books but just can't seem to get rid of them.

Kenneth McKinley | 1717 comments Mod
Introduced to the Nightbreed in Midian. This is getting interesting.

I got started on the train yesterday. It reads pretty quickly. (view spoiler)

Kenneth McKinley | 1717 comments Mod
It does read pretty fast. I really liked the story. But, I found that I wish Barker had elaborated a little more. (view spoiler)

message 37: by Addy (new) - added it

Addy | 5111 comments Im about halfway. Its still pretty good, but so far not much has been said about the night breed.

Daniel Barnett | 239 comments I really loved Cabal. Everyone should read Imajica at some point in his/her life. That book is damn near life changing.

message 39: by Addy (new) - added it

Addy | 5111 comments Yeah, I've heard alot about imajica. I'm hoping to cone across it at my local used book store. That's where I've found most of barkers books so far.

message 40: by Andy (new) - rated it 4 stars

Andy (manicsloth) | 730 comments Anyone wanna buddy read Imajica? I read the first half about 5 years ago. It is an amazing book, but you need to have time to read it.

message 41: by Addy (new) - added it

Addy | 5111 comments I would read it with you, but id have to order it from amazon. If you're serious about it, let me know. Im almost done GoT book 3 and was thinkin about taking a brk from the series, so id have room for this huge read.

message 42: by Daniel (new)

Daniel Barnett | 239 comments It's probably too fresh in my mind for a re-read(though I absolutely intend to read it again at some point), but I would happily discuss with you as you go along if you'd like.

message 43: by Michael (last edited Jun 27, 2014 06:34AM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Michael Benavidez Just thought I'd throw my two cents in and say that I did love Cabal but it was a personal let down after reading Hellbound Heart first.

Also, haven't seen Nightbreed but it's in my list of movies to watch.

Also have Imajica on my shelf but haven't gotten to reading it haha I think I caught up with all the parts

message 44: by Andy (new) - rated it 4 stars

Andy (manicsloth) | 730 comments Cool. I've got Imajica sitting on my desk in my top of tbr pile.

message 45: by Addy (new) - added it

Addy | 5111 comments Im more than halfway, but I'm feeling like I'm not enjoying this as much. It has more of a bizarre feeling to it, but we'll see.

message 46: by Andy (new) - rated it 4 stars

Andy (manicsloth) | 730 comments I listened to the audiobook of Thief of Always today at work. Not as mind-blowing as I remember it from when I was a kid, but pretty good nonetheless.

Michael Benavidez Addy wrote: "Im more than halfway, but I'm feeling like I'm not enjoying this as much. It has more of a bizarre feeling to it, but we'll see."

I feel you on that, really. I think for me, it was all the hype I read in the reviews. The book is more of a, if you got the time to read but nothing too serious then read this, type of book.

message 48: by Addy (new) - added it

Addy | 5111 comments Totally agree. It seems like new characters are being introduced. I'll try to get back to it and see if I change my mind.

Michael Benavidez Should definitely do that. While not an amazing book it's still worth a read

message 50: by Addy (new) - added it

Addy | 5111 comments Hmm, I surprised myself. I like this Elaine and Kavanaugh very much. Interesting turn for the book.
