So a man is imprisoned in a big cell with a group of random strangers. Every so often, a couple of people are chosen to be killed. One day, the protagonist is chosen to die. He's rich, so he offers his entire estate to the family of anyone who will take his place. Someone agrees and they are killed. The story cuts to many years later. The protagonist is now free. He looks for his old house, that is now owned by the family of the deceased man. The protagonist lies about who he is to them. I read this in about 2016 and It may have been related to the Holocaust.
