Anita (anitafajitapitareada) June's May Sure challenge is to read a historical fiction/non-fiction that explores an era of social change, or social movement.

Think of some turning points in history and explore the cultural and social dynamics surrounding it. Think conflict and politics.

Again, these are personal challenges, if you think it fits then it fits! Have fun and let us know what you're reading and why, and if it fiction or non-fiction.

Eujean2 | 24 comments For my comic selection, I read March: Book One (& the following two books.) John Lewis' personal story about the civil right movement is amazing. Even if you don't typically read comics, I highly recommend it

For my non-graphic choice, I am reading Octavia's Brood: Science Fiction Stories from Social Justice Movements It is a collection of pieces by people on the forefront of social justice movements. It's not a history (yet), but there is a lot to be said about being able to imagine a better future. I'm a few stories in and I quite like it. All of the authors are inspired by Octavia E. Butler, thus the name.

Anita (anitafajitapitareada) a book I read and highly recommend is At The Dark End of the Street by Danielle McGuire. It shares feminine perspective at the beginning of the Civil rights movement, and all about Rosa Parks' contributions - which are so much more than history books in school teach us. Definitely opened my eyes about both the Civil Rights Movement and feminist history - or some more lack thereof.
