Justin wrote: "Both Audible and ACX"Ahhh!! ACX is the production platform for Audible (owned by Amazon - surprise!)
You pay ACX when your audiobook earns royalties. Otherwise you're only paying your narrator (either upfront or a 20/20 profit sharing split).
So, technically, you can get your title on Audible ith no money down, the same as Amazon and Create Space.

Yeah, there are a few options I could use to get audiobooks, but I'd have to pay upfront, which I can't afford. And there's one option that would let me use the royalty share, but they take 15% off the top. I'm considering it, but since my paperbacks haven't sold at all, I figure there's not a lot of point trying audio. Ebook seems to be the main thing I should focus on.
I really love the idea of turning my book into an audiobook. I found when editing, listening to my computer read it back to me was pretty enjoyable so my imagination goes wild with how it would sound with a human narrator vs robot voice.BUT I heard it's hard to do the 50/50 split on AVX unless your book has sold a lot and has achieved a certain level of popularity. Even the website seems to imply this? Does anyone know if it's even possible to get someone to sign on even if your book is in its "infant" stage?
Or at least, does anyone know of anyone who has?
Sarah Noffke has had success doing it that way. She's on our thread- you can write her and ask. She's always helpful.
My son paid his actors outright. We negotiated an hourly rate. At first, Dan, his actor did it a little cheaper to help defray out costs. Later, as we both saw the audio books paying off- we re negotiated new prices where he made more. We wanted to be fair with him. If you get our magazine, Indie Author's Monthly- Dan did an article for us about his experiences as an audible actor.

Also fiverr and other third party producers are less expensive than ACX.
This thread has been a great help but I'd like to go it alone. Does anyone know anything about doing it yourself? I can (I hope) fix up the use of a sound studio and I can read my own books (voice trained!) but having got the recording how do I format/make/turn it into an audio book to sell?
Sorry Carole, just seen your question. Well, I think the audio has paid for itself, but it's not making anyone rich at this point! I think we'll keep going with it. As a side note, Rita Emmett the author I work with has herself reading her books as a freebie. You can go to her website and download it for free, kind of like a read along style.
Something to think of!
I know right? I'm thinking of doing with one of ours as soon as I look into some cheap audio gear. Also, do you do video trailers for your books? I know someone on here does some cool trailers for books, I just can't remember who lol
I've done them for all of Michael's books. I've done a few for some of mine. I find them a useful tool when we are promoting.
This one Createspace did for me.

I am on vacation in two weeks. As usual for the last few years it will be a writing vacation. Anyway, one of my goals is to look into Audible again. I do want my books on audio I should be working on it.

I have a friend with a good voice who is a HUGE fan of my books and wants to narrate. She would do it for free but I plan to profit-split with her. But how to do the recording?
Check out the magazine this coming month. Dan, Michael's narrator wrote an article and I want to say he touches on that- but I'm not sure.
Here are some other articels on it

Though I'm keen to get an audiobook produced, this is a great podcast from Joanna Penn about audiobook production, which highlights the pros and cons of ACX and exclusivity (SEVEN YEARS!!), and also the rapid changing landscape of indie book production. You might just be handing over a goldmine, so it's well worth a listen before anyone does!
