Ok, I sent a very nice letter (not bitchy like y'all know I wanted to be) regarding not getting Justified and got a super nice letter back with suggestions for improving my profile and the widget to Justified. I'm feeling pretty damn excited right now. I'm sending this not to brag but to say I don't think it hurts to send a followup letter if you get denied...I remembered someone else on here getting a nasty response back from the publisher before...so it did make me a little nervous but I was lucky and this gal was super nice.

I'm curious as to what this "nice letter" contained. I had never thought of doing that before.

I don't think I would normally have done it but I read Unbroken quickly, reviewed it and knew they were using my review - so I was so baffled why I was such a quick rejection.

You want me to take screenshots?????????

message 318: by Michele (new)

Michele (guilliem) | 2131 comments This is the email I sent regarding my initial denial for Justified:

I respect your decision. However, I do find it frustrating. It is difficult for me to demonstrate to you the number of people that I reach with my reviews because I mention books I read on various sites and pages throughout social media as opportunities present themselves. I was highly positive about Unbroken after reading and mentioned it to numerous other readers. If you noted, I also read and reviewed it early on via NetGalley. My review shows up on the first page when you pull up the book. I was unable to link my reviews on Amazon, etc. to my review on NetGalley because the review had been clipped (which I believe means you are utilizing the review) and if I make any changes (including attaching the links for my reviews), it would have unclipped it. However, I can provide you links if that is needed to confirm that I placed reviews on both Amazon and B&N when it was released.

I understand that publishers look for blogs, etc. However, I can assure you in talking with other readers, that blogs don’t have as big of an influence as you think. Many readers are more influenced by reviews from people they see review frequently. I am one of those people. Anyway, that’s just my opinion.

Thank you for letting me vent. I’m sure your position is not an easy one. Best of luck with the book!

Michele (guilliem) | 2131 comments Here's her response:

Michele,

Thank you for your email. We do get many requests every day, and we cannot approve everyone.

In looking at your profile, I see that it doesn't say that your profile is updated for 2019 and I like to see authors you enjoy in your profile and specific genres. Noting you enjoy New Adult is especially helpful since I know many readers have come to Jay in that way. You have a great feedback rating, but sometimes it's difficult for me to decipher taste when profiles are so general. (Follower numbers, stats, are also really helpful!) Since you enjoyed Unbroken, I'm including a widget for Justified below. (Just click the link.)

I do hope you'll take my comments into consideration when going forward with NetGalley. There are only two people on our team at Forever and we do spend a lot of time using it for review copies.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

(So, I just started on NetGalley this year, so I'm not sure how it wasn't updated for 2019...lol. My take away is that I need to list specific authors and genres that I prefer/follow? Does anyone else do this??)

message 328: by Jean (new)

Jean | 1658 comments Oh, I did add favorite publishers a while ago......

I swear I think a lot of times they will approve book 1 of a series and then deny the second hoping you will just buy it......

Could be BUT I did get approved so there has to be something on my profile they liked...dare I email them?

What email did you use Michele when contacting them?

Michele (guilliem) | 2131 comments Dang Ela! I guarantee you were approved because of your feedback ratio - plus there are two people doing it. I think it's the luck of the draw with whoever looks at your request sometimes....

Michele (guilliem) | 2131 comments I don't know what happened up there when I responded...what I said was I bet you were approved because of that awesome feedback ratio Ela...and maybe a hawt pro pic (lol)

Also, I think it's luck of the draw as to who reviews your request.

My feedback ratio is 77% right now but was closer to 80% when I made my original request.

I have Rebel Born - it popped up as a Read Now for a minute initially and before I could request it and post it in here, they made it a Available for Request. I was so ticked. But I did get it. Their stats on there are wrong tho - they say it releases in August and archives in June and it's flip flopped. It releases next week.
