If you like pulp fiction with dark, but principled, protagonists, the short story cycle Call Me Smitty, by independent writer B. R. Stateham, might be worth checking out. It's well-done semi-noir, with an assassin protagonist. My four-star review is here:

Stateham has a considerable body of self-published or small-press fiction to his credit, but this is the only one of his works that I've read.
