I'm from New York.

C. (Comment, never msg). (riedel) State or city? Do we surmise if it's unspecified, people mean the city, or Long Island? I just learned Long Island is the mass of land the city occupies. Neat. I'm a southern Manitoban, a prairie girl. Recently, we moved with our two dear cats to the country.

'Fluffy's Law' did not pass in our province, which is terrible news for sheltered animals. It means building owners are allowed to refuse tenancy to pets. It makes homes scarcer. We said 'F that' (like any good New Yorker or Bostonian) and are an hour from the capital city. :-) We grow our food and now have seven. As we said, 'F that'. LOL!

I'm on Long Island...and, yes, we are a mass of cities :)

C. (Comment, never msg). (riedel) Manhattan / Bronx / Queens ('New York City') is one of the cities on "Long Island"? I have heard people say they are from there, like Billy Joel, and wondered why they didn't just say their town. I thought it *was* a town. It's confusing.

No, those cities aren't part of Long Island. Long Island is separate and there are a ton of cities (actually towns, not big cities) on Long Island that, for the most part, people outside of New York haven't heard of before. It's just easier to say Long Island or New York.

C. (Comment, never msg). (riedel) Which island are Manhattan (and boroughs) on? So - Long Island is small towns as I figured. Billy Joel has songs about fishing. ;) Liberty island is just the statue, no towns?

Manhattan is a borough and it's on its own island.

Liberty island, I guess you mean the Statue of Liberty? That's by itself. Right, no towns there.
