Danny North knew from early childhood that his family was different, and that he was different from them. While his cousins were learning how to create the things that commoners called fairies, ghosts, golems, trolls, werewolves, and other such miracles that were the heritage of the North family, Danny worried that he would never show a talent, never form an outself.
He grew up in the rambling old house, filled with dozens of cousins, and aunts and uncles, all ruled by his father. Their home was isolated in the mountains of western Virginia, far from town, far from schools, far from other people.
There are many secrets in the House, and many rules that Danny must follow. There is a secret library with only a few dozen books, and none of them in English — but Danny and his cousins are expected to become fluent in the language of the books. While Danny’s cousins are free to create magic whenever they like, they must never do it where outsiders might see.
Unfortunately, there are some secrets kept from Danny as well. And that will lead to disaster for the North family.
Chapter 1: (view spoiler)[ Why does Loki have to do the bad things? It would be interesting to learn more about Danny's abilities. Also, I wonder if there are some people who know that he is able to create gates. That would be interesting. (hide spoiler)]
Chapter 4: (view spoiler)[ Stupid Danny! Trying to shoplift? I think it was dumb of him to do so. Hopefully, these guys, Eric and Tony are not bad guys. He was pretty convincing when he went hysteric of the security guard about the whole "mistaken" shoplifting incident. (hide spoiler)]
Chapter 8: (view spoiler)[ I do not think Danny is made for a life of burglary. He called the cops, while he was still in the house. That is kinda funny. I think he misses his Family. (hide spoiler)]
Chapter 13: (view spoiler)[ Oh my! I think Veevee is going a little bit overboard with the Worship thing for Danny. I wonder why she wants to worship him. The story is interesting because we are seeing how Danny grew up and it is great. (hide spoiler)]
Chapter 19: (view spoiler)[ First day of school. I wonder how that will turn out. Omg! The Greek girl found him. Now, what will happen. I am really enjoying the world and characters. (hide spoiler)]
Ending Thoughts: (view spoiler)[ Great first installment. It was cool to see how Danny lived outside of the Compound and how he had a strong support system outside of the Compound in the later chapters. I really liked the world. It was unique and the Magic system was fantastic. The characters were great. There were times where Danny did bore me, but overall, his character was quite enjoyable. I think Orson Scott Card is awesome, and this book is the first book of a great new series. I give this book a 4.35/5. (hide spoiler)]
