Jennifer (jhaltenburger) So Barb, I’m still in the middle of The Madness of Mercury (Zodiac Mystery #1) by Connie di Marco and I’m not liking it anywhere near as much as the next two in the series. I can see why you didn’t think much of it— the two storylines are a little disjointed and that religious cult is so irritating I’m having trouble making myself get back to it. The second and third books are much much better!!

Jennifer (jhaltenburger) Agnieszka, I pick Home Before Dark (Carolina Moon #1) by Christy Barritt for you— I like the dark blue and gold!

My next five:

Who Do, Voodoo? (A Mind for Murder, #1) by Rochelle Staab Fashions Fade, Haunted Is Eternal (A Haunted Vintage Mystery, #7) by Rose Pressey Beautiful Invention A Novel of Hedy Lamarr by Margaret Porter The East End by Jason Allen Searching for Grace Kelly by Michael Callahan

I think I'll take your word for it :) The first one left such a bad taste in my mouth, I've avoided the author completely ever since!

Not only the covers but the blurb sounds great as well. Another series on my watch list. Luckily these books are in a price range I consider to buy them.

Ah but the story itself is anything *but tranquil. I've read four of the five books I posted above, so I'll try again :) But first... Jennifer, so you're not left hanging, I'll choose The Summer Country by Lauren Willig from your selections.

My new five:
The Ruin (Cormac Reilly, #1) by Dervla McTiernan Ice Cold Heart (Monkeewrench, #10) by P.J. Tracy The Long Call (Two Rivers, #1) by Ann Cleeves Bitch Creek (Stoney Calhoun #1) by William G. Tapply Owl's Outstanding Donuts by Robin Yardi

Connie N. | 3775 comments I finished up my hot guy cover from Post #211:

Untamed by Caitlin Crews - 8/18/19 ♥♥♥♥
Untamed (Hotel Temptation, #3) by Caitlin Crews

This was just a random pick from when I was browsing through NetGalley selections, and I really chose it because it had a "U" title. Turns out I really liked it. And the best part is that the first two in this series are also "U" titles that I intend to go back and read. So a win-win-win for me.

message 272: by Connie N. (new)

Connie N. | 3775 comments Jennifer, assuming you haven't read all the books you posted yet, I'm choosing The Arrivals by Meg Mitchell Moore , both because I love the summery cover...plus I read this book a while ago and loved it.

My next 5 hot guys:

Mr. Big by Delancey Stewart Fourth Down (Game On, #4) by Desiree Holt Playing Hurt (Aces Hockey, #6) by Kelly Jamieson Under Control (Boston Fire, #5) by Shannon Stacey Cowboy, Cross My Heart by Donna Grant

The Violets of March by Sarah Jio The Summer Country by Lauren Willig Who Do, Voodoo? (A Mind for Murder, #1) by Rochelle Staab and have started another: Delicious and Suspicious (A Memphis BBQ Mystery, #1) by Riley Adams so I'll go ahead and pick for Connie:

Connie, I pick Fourth Down (Game On, #4) by Desiree Holt for you!

message 276: by Barb (new)

Barb | 1895 comments Jennifer, from the books you posted above, if you haven't already read it, I choose The Peacock Summer by Hannah Richell . This was not an easy decision, but it's the one that jumped out at me first :)

I've finally finished the book chosen for me in message #276. I didn't love it as much as other readers have, but I suspect that's because I was more in the mood for an action-based book.
The Long Call (Two Rivers #1), by Ann Cleeves, finished 9/2 ★★★

I couldn't pick either, Barb -- why do you think I foisted all the hard work off on someone else? :-)

I have to leap in and pick for you because one of your books has a cover that I've been admiring for years. I pick The Sunday Philosophy Club (Sunday Philosophy Club, #1) by Alexander McCall Smith .

My next five:

The East End by Jason Allen Searching for Grace Kelly by Michael Callahan The Secret Life of Violet Grant (Schuyler Sisters #1) by Beatriz Williams The Chelsea Girls by Fiona Davis . Death Waits in the Dark (A Writer's Apprentice Mystery #4) by Julia Buckley .

Connie N. | 3775 comments Thanks, Jennifer. Here are my next 5. I'm sticking with a pastel theme this time:

The Lake Season by Hannah McKinnon Every Time You Go Away by Beth Harbison Win Me Over (Hearts and Crafts, #2) by Nicole Michaels Ink Flamingos (Tattoo Shop Mystery, #4) by Karen E. Olson The Military Wife (A Heart of a Hero, #1) by Laura Trentham

Connie N. | 3775 comments Oops, I guess I forgot something...

Jennifer, I pick Searching for Grace Kelly by Michael Callahan for you. (Thanks for the gentle reminder, lol.) I love the stylized lights behind her against a dark background.

message 285: by Jennifer (last edited Sep 18, 2019 03:16PM) (new)

Jennifer (jhaltenburger) That's what I like about it too. I finished one of my pending books for this challenge about two days ago: Delicious and Suspicious (A Memphis BBQ Mystery, #1) by Riley Adams -- must say the ending surprised me because it was quite outside the usual cozy guidelines! Anyway, I feel justified in picking for Connie because I finished it.

I'm picking The Lake Season by Hannah McKinnon for no better reason than I really like that font!

My next five:

The East End by Jason Allen The Secret Life of Violet Grant (Schuyler Sisters #1) by Beatriz Williams The Chelsea Girls by Fiona Davis . Death Waits in the Dark (A Writer's Apprentice Mystery #4) by Julia Buckley Tony's Wife by Adriana Trigiani .

message 286: by Connie N. (new)

Barb | 1895 comments I've finally finished the book Jennifer chose for me in message #279:
The Sunday Philosophy Club (Isabel Dalhousie #1), by Alexander McCall Smith, finished 9/15 ★★ .5
The Sunday Philosophy Club (Sunday Philosophy Club, #1) by Alexander McCall Smith

To be honest, the only reason I finished the book is that it's the book chosen for this month's F2F book group.

I found it hard to relate to the characters and the resolution to the mystery was quite unsatisfactory. Most of all, though, the main character has a lot of ... inner dialogues? with herself on almost every page of the book, all brought on by something that has happened or a thought that has popped into her head. Most of us are introspective in this way from time to time, but with Isabel, it's much more often than "from time to time." For a change, this is a series that I do not plan to continue.

So what I got from that is that Isabel Dalhousie doesn't understand that the reason it's called the SUNDAY philosophy club is because you're supposed to give everyone around you a freakin' break on the other six days.

message 289: by Barb (new)

Barb | 1895 comments Jennifer, from your book choices, the deep blue cover of The East End jumped out at me.

My next five:
In the Clearing (Tracy Crosswhite, #3) by Robert Dugoni The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead On Thin Icing (A Bakeshop Mystery, #3) by Ellie Alexander Whiplash (FBI Thriller, #14) by Catherine Coulter Breach of Trust (Jason Kolarich, #2) by David Ellis

Barb | 1895 comments Jennifer wrote: "Isabel Dalhousie doesn't understand that the reason it's called the SUNDAY philosophy club is because you're supposed to give everyone around you a freakin' break on the other six days."

LOL Fortunately for her friends, most of these discourses are in her head, so they're not subjected to her ramblings. Unfortunately for the reader (or in my case, the listener), they make up a large part of the book, and we can't avoid them.

message 291: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jhaltenburger) Barb -- thanks for the pick -- it's obvious you know both a beautiful cover and an "E" title when you see one....... For you, Whiplash (FBI Thriller, #14) by Catherine Coulter jumped out at me.

My next five:

The Secret Life of Violet Grant (Schuyler Sisters #1) by Beatriz Williams The Chelsea Girls by Fiona Davis . Death Waits in the Dark (A Writer's Apprentice Mystery #4) by Julia Buckley Tony's Wife by Adriana Trigiani A Night's Tail (Magical Cats Mystery #11) by Sofie Kelly .

message 292: by Barb (new)

Barb | 1895 comments Thanks, Jennifer. I really like that series but keep putting off the next book, so I needed the push to get it read sooner rather than later :)

message 293: by Connie N. (new)

Connie N. | 3775 comments I can never resist this challenge, both picking for someone else as well as coming up with my own choices.

Jennifer, I pick The Secret Life of Violet Grant (Schuyler Sisters #1) by Beatriz Williams . I just love her pose and that gorgeous hat keeps catching my eye.

My next five are all books that I own that I need to get to sooner rather than later:

When the Sun Goes Down... (Harlequin Blaze, #472) by Crystal Green Unscrewed (A Chrissy McMullen Mystery, #3) by Lois Greiman One of These Nights by Susan Sizemore Emergency! True Stories From The Nation's ERs by Mark Brown Seeing Red (Firefighter, #3) by Jill Shalvis
