I wasn't surprised; Annihilation absorbed me the same way. What did astonish me was the absolute simplicity and grace of Rachel's narrative. I don't normally pay much attention to language and structure in a first reading but I kept thinking this is one of the most beautifully crafted texts I've ever read. I kept stopping to reread passages.

(sorry so long to post; work is overwhelming right now)

Oh yes--it's brilliant. The whole paranoia and set-up of The Trespasser is an excellent example of layering in characterization and how that helps plot.

Bettina, that was exactly how I felt too, but with Annihilation. I actually had to buy the books (I initially borrowed them from the library) because I just needed to be able to re-read paragraphs when I need them. My favourite line was the one when the biologist saw the dolphin and the bit about its eye - not gonna go into details because spoilers. But it really haunted me.

Oh, thanks--that's very kind. Rachel's voice allowed me that. Sometimes the character dictates the style so completely your novel can't be lyrical or graceful. But it was nice to use a voice like that that allowed me to come at rhythm and sentence structure in that way.

Tiffany Coffman (tiffanycoffman) | 24 comments I have several of Tana French's on my TBR. I've been stuck on psychological thrillers lately.

Just a reminder that tomorrow is the final day for questions in our Author Reader discussion with Jeff.

Jeff, I do want to thank you whole heartedly for hanging with us all week. There were so many great conversations taking place at the beginning of the week, I don't know how you managed to keep up! I hope you enjoyed your time here with us as well!

My final question for you,

What has been your best, and worst, fan encounter?
