SOLVED. Forgotten book about a Gardener, some what a social misfit, building a business empire. [s]

Hi,
Many years ago i read a book about a Gardener, his real name was not "Gardener" but since he worked as a gardener he took the name Mr. Gardener, he was somehow considered "retarded" but still managed to build a business empire from two empty hands and a garden shed. I read it many years ago so it was written well before 2000.
Have searched all over but cant find it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
