John Seymour Throughout the book, reference is made to characters or rulers having virtue or being virtuous, a key concept in Chinese tradition. What do you think is meant by "virtue" in this context?

It depends on which of the Chinese rulers you are speaking to :)

Most of them value loyalty as a great virtue even when that loyalty is to their enemy. Lots of characters who refuse to surrender are spared death or given a noble funeral to reward their loyalty to their leader.
