I love Peabody too. She often tells Eve what she thinks when others won't. I like that she will confront Eve even if she is a little afraid to do so. Peabody is always good for a laugh or two in every book. I do think she is wrong not telling McNabb that she is only friends with Charles. I get her reasons but it isn't honest. Not a good foundation for a relationship.

Michelle funny I see Alfred too when I picture Summerset.

Did anyone notice any "flup-ups" with Eve saying one thing that meant something else? I believe Roarke corrects her on one in this one...something about Eve calling E-Men E-Drones. lol

Anyone else notice anything that needs sharing - make a note of anything we're tracking?

Michelle | 2666 comments As I'm loosely tracking the candy thief someone mentioned the chocolate incident but I'm glad to report that no theft edition occurred. Wonder how long that hidey hole is safe for. Lol

Isn't it great what she allows certain people to call her? LT sugar. White girl. And how she hates being called wifey Yet she really stepped up in that role. Loved the scene with her and the whole gang when Summerset returned home. And how she pulled a Roarke on Roarke. Feeding him, tranqing him and monitoring him while working after.
I suppose poor Roarke really was hit from all sides in this. No wonder he got plastered with Brian.

I love the fact that she tranq'd him like he has done to her in the passed.

Rae | 140 comments Loved that scene with Brian as well. Didn't think Roarke would ever let himself get so smashed. Glad to know he was somewhere safe though. While we are in Ireland, loved the scene where Eve is talking to Sinead, and Sinead says "I want more chances with him, and you'll be a large part of letting g that happen, or preventing it."
"Nobody prevents Roarke."
"Nobody", Sinead said with a nod, " but you."
" I wouldn't do anything to get in the way if something he needed. He needed to come here. He'll need to come back. Maybe you weren't looking in the right place when he introduced me to you, when he looked at you. He already lives you."
As for Eve not knowing how to do the " wifely" things, she sure steps up to the plate when she tells Sinead "The shuttle runs both ways, if you decide to come to New York."

I love the scenes between Eve and Sinead as they size one another up. Nice they can each see the love for Roarke on the other's face. It feels good to see Roarke with family - to know he has some good things come of a bad time in his life.

Karen ♐ (kmk1214) | 789 comments One of my favorite scenes was when Eve tranqed Roarke and how he was so surprised she did. And I loved the scene between Eve and Sinead too. It was wonderful to see his family embrace him.

Eve (everf) | 95 comments Love this series and how we discover new things about the main and secondary characters with each next book.
Portrait in Death had so many things going on. Like Sommerset falling down the steps and breaking his leg. Someone killing young and attractive students. Roarke discovering shocking things about his past. Sommerset and Eve making some sort of truce. Eve kicking Roarke's ass and tranqing him, and I could go on and on. So many things in just one book.

Eve (everf) | 95 comments One of the most heartwrenching moments in this story was when Eve and Roarke went to Crack's home and notified him that his younger sister Alicia was murdered. Crack couldn't believe it and hoped till the last minute that it was a mistake. When he saw her in the morgue, he crumpled and Eve held this big man as he wept...it was so heartbreaking, sad and final.
The killer wanted to capture the light but he never seemed to understood that he killed young people for real. Those he killed had parents, siblings, people who cared for them and now they had to face their sudden death. He lost his mother but he caused other people to loose their daughter, son, sister all because of some weird notion. ..

Michelle | 2666 comments Isn't that always the case Eve . Killer are only interested in their own intention( I don't know what's the right term) those that are left with the lost never enters into the equation.

So true. They have a goal, a reason, a purpose...a justification for doing what they do. And they're blind to everything else as the murders are justified in their own crazy mind.

Yes, exactly. Those killers never seem to realize how much their actions cause hurt and harm. Plus they find strange explanations / justifications to their actions. At least in this story the killer did not torture his victims...he sounded like he was insane and didn't quite get the reality. I think it was well said that he was a pathetic individual - but murder is never an answer!

Another poignant scene from Portrait in Death:

When Eve didn’t rise, Peabody walked over, poured two cups of water. “My dad used to love these old cartoon vids. I remember this one, where this talking cat was crazy. Totally bonked. Anyway, to show it, they had these little birds flying around his head and chirping.”

She drank her water while Eve stared at her own. “Anyway, that’s what I’d see with him. Little birds flying around his head, except it’s too sad and too awful for little birds.”

“Sometimes, you do the job, you close the case, but the door just doesn’t shut for you. I guess this is going to be one of those. Roarke was right. He’s just pathetic. It’s easier when they’re vicious or greedy or just downright evil. Pathetic leaves the door open a crack.”

Karen (rhyta) | 184 comments I had forgotten so much of this one, it was like listening for the first time again!
So many emotional scenes: Eve getting shut out by Roarke, Roarke's life tipped upside down with the news about his mother, Eve having to tell Crack his sister was dead, Trueheart almost being killed....

I have to say this is one of the best ones of the series and I love how I can listen and laugh out loud and then be overcome with sadness and keep on reading because I have got to know what happened.

So glad this buddy read is here, I am enjoying everyone's comments too.

I'm glad we're doing this buddy read again too, Karen. It is such a great feeling to read and share these books with all of you. I love getting everyone's viewpoints on everything. It greatly enhances the reading experience to have such great participation and sharing of ideas. And as I mentioned earlier, this series never gets old...I love it over & over & over again. :)

Michelle | 2666 comments Ladies there is nothing better than sharing the joy of these books.
Sandra I sometimes go back to our previous Reread discussions and its really pop roving that we find something new every time we read these.
