I made a thread about this a while back in another thread and I thought I would start one up again in this group. So have you ever been on a site and noticed all the simple things they don't have that could make the site just a bit better? I have! On this very site. Here is a list of changes I think Goodreads should consider that could benefit us all. Please feel free to comment on mine and think of your own to write below.

Giveaways- Maybe create a way to inform those who didn't win that if they are still interested in the book to reach out to the author. If not this then some other kind of change as I feel giveaways could use some kind of improvement.

Adding a .5 to the Ratings- We have the option to rate books from 1-5 but what if your torn between one number and the other? I say they should add a .5 system. Say you liked a book but you don't want to give it a 3 or a 4..you could give it a 3.5. Simple idea I think would be useful.

Cool Down on GR Recommendations- Ever read a book and then look at your recommendations on GR and wonder why in the heck they are recommending you the book? I think they need to cool it down and be a bit more specific in recommendations and not give you books you may like based on one little thing they share with another book.

Naming Shelves- Specifically creating a folder with an inappropriate name to throw a book in. Also if you have now intention of reading the book why put it on a folder just to show people you don't like it? I get that people have rights but this just seems completely rude and pointless, I don't know that they could fix it but it could use a change.

Answering comments on App- I'm sure you've all noticed if I respond to your comments I name you instead of replying, this is because I use the GR app on my phone. I don't know, maybe make a feature so that you can hit reply on your phone and you can answer people's comments? seems easy enough.

GR Responds to Requests for efficiently- Ever try writing Goodreads? They take their sweet ass time. They need to be more fast in responding to their members.

Love this idea! I also believe if the book has not been released...you shouldn't be able to rate it based on whether or not it sounds good to you. <3

I do like that they allow us to upload our own book covers now.

Lily Vagabond (lilyauthor) Heh, all of these things are users' responsibility ;)

There's improvements, and then there's borderline dictatorship. Not everyone who uses this website is going to think in the exact same way. Hell, not everyone even speaks the same language.

The only two ways I can see these inefficiencies could be resolved by GR, a website run mostly by volunteers, is have separate sites per country. But then, you get into the whole segregation argument...

The other way, would be to eleminate various options completely, like naming shelves. But then we get back to the dictator argument...

In terms of apps, they're run by third-parties. So you would have to take it up with another company.

I'm with Jim. :)

J.S. (jsedge) | 356 comments I agree book ratings should allow increased specificity (5* is way too limiting), but rather than .5 couldn't they just change to a 10 scale rating like IMDB? Surely would bring about improved accuracy.

I would love a stop to rating books before release. That's just plain silliness.

Also, I'm set to notification only and I find a lot slips through the gaps with this. Surely it's not too hard and makes more sense to base my notifications on previous activity and personal interactions.

J.S. (jsedge) | 356 comments Separate sites per country would suck some serious ass!

message 8: by Lily (new)

Lily Vagabond (lilyauthor) Joanne, it already is, but it depends on how active you are in a topic discussion. That's why I set it to email notifications. I don't miss much that way, but I do find I have to check in with a group every so often, and see what's going on. I can just imagine the computer crap involved with sending notifications for every single little comment on the whole website. So, like I said, users' responsibility :)

message 9: by J.S. (new)

J.S. (jsedge) | 356 comments Yeah, I guess. But it seems most my notifications are from discussions and groups I've had no part in :/ and comments on my page are missed if I don't think to keep check.

No point me setting it to emails...not sure I remember the password for the email account it's matched with.

*Shrugs* Figure a lot of it isn't as simple as would seem: Perfect world stuff.

message 10: by Virginia (new)

Virginia Rand I'd love to be able to search the site for the people whose ratings most match mine but that might just be me.

No. OMG. That would be spectacular!

Agreed.

And a .5 would be wonderful.

J.S. (jsedge) | 356 comments Also, is there a way of separating * ratings when checking out book? On Amazon you can choose the * ratings you're wanting to read, but I can't figure out how to specify on goodreads.

You can on GR, too. When on a book's page, there's a "filter" link, right under "Community Reviews"; hovering will show you the different ratings, from 5* to 1*. However, I've noticed it doesn't work well on slow connections, and I'm not sure you can use this option if accessing GR from a phone app.

I'd be all up for .5 ratings (including 0.5, because some books are just so horrible 1* is too nice). The rest doesn't matter much to me.

message 15: by Anne (new)

Anne Berkeley (aberkeley) I'd like to add, that since Amazon owns Goodreads, it would be nice of the reviews were shared both ways. I think it was Sony's book site, you could see reviews from Amazon, or something like that.

Justin (justinbienvenue) | 1275 comments Mod
Anne, great idea! They should do that for reviews.

lol. How about a no star rating?

message 18: by Belle (new)

Belle Blackburn | 30 comments I would like to get a notification when a new review or rating is posted on my book. And I second the .5 star.

Justin (justinbienvenue) | 1275 comments Mod
No star lol. Obviously just don't give the book any star.

Belle- That is a good idea, notifying an author of a rating or review.

message 20: by James (new)

James Corkill | 31 comments It might be too difficult to add a .5 to the review system just for GR. How would it affect the standard review system when all the reviews for all the editions are combined? Just food for thought.

message 21: by Belle (new)

Belle Blackburn | 30 comments Well, I loved those professors who rounded up to the next letter grade when it was .5 or above. :)

Also on the author thing, I wish Goodreads would update so that it tells you there is a new review you could actually see it then instead of waiting until the next day.

But then they will think you forgot to give it a rating.

I concur with author notification when a review is posted.

Unless you write in the review that you give the book no stars because you think it's so bad.

message 24: by Noel (new)

Noel Coughlan (noel_coughlan) | 24 comments The 0.5 sounds like a good idea, but would people just adjust their expectations? Would 4.0 become the new 3? Personally, I like the five star system. Choosing out of five numbers is about all I can manage. I would dither more with more numbers. If you have 0.5's and a zero...I don't even have enough fingers and thumbs for that. :)

One thing I have suggested to Goodreads is to do something with the online previewer. It doesn't show images in the body of the document, which is why I don't have a GR preview of my book. Hopefully, they will do something about it in the near future.

message 25: by Yzabel (new)

Yzabel Ginsberg (yzabelginsberg) | 173 comments Yeah, but no stars on GR = no rating. If I think a book deserves a 0/5, then I want this 0 to be reflected in its overall rating, not ignored as "not rated". (I know, I'm an ass. I'm invoking my prerogative as a curmudgeon French teacher who's seriously fed-up with all the coddling and sugarcoating going rampant everywhere. :P)

Virginia, I think this could be a good idea.

message 27: by Lily (new)

Lily Vagabond (lilyauthor) In my honest opinion, the best improvement would be a simple how to guide. The way it's done now, the guidelines just kinda sorta skirt around everything. Many problems would be resolved if there was a clear, step by step guide.

Step 1, make sure you use a current active email so that notifications sent will be accurate.

Step 2, don't spam.

Etc, etc.

Definitely top of the list.

I get what you mean Lily, a basic request yet the question is can you really expect everyone to follow? For every follower there is a rule breaker waiting to not listen to directions.

message 30: by Lily (new)

Lily Vagabond (lilyauthor) I'm not referring to rules, the more rules anyone makes, the more people will break them. Just a how-to guide. Goodreads is an online library, it's not social media, and requires a different mode of operation.
