ABANDONED. science fiction, little girl lives in a tower with a wizard

This book is about a little girl who lives in a tower with a wizard. The wizard gets into a huge battle with other wizards then decides to take the girl through a portal and abandon her. He leaves her in the desert with a lavish meal that is intended to be her last, as all the food is highly perishable and the only water is in a wide-mouthed crystal pitcher.

I'm assuming since you said it was about the little girl that she survived? HOW did she survive? Why did he decide to abandon her? (And yes, spoilers are permitted in this group. In fact they are usually actively encouraged.) Also, why do you call it sci-fi when you have wizards? Wouldn't that be more fantasy? Why did you chose sci-fi and not fantasy? (I can come up with lots more questions to get your little grey cells spinning if you want me to.)
