Patti | 7 comments The island is populated by killer butterflies that guard a treasure. There are people who 'never' want to leave, but the hero meets a woman who does. They try to escape and there is lots of danger. The island is located in the center of a volcano, very deep down. The hero is an african-american male and the cover of the book is paperback and has a photo of the hero and a large, multicolored butterfly. I first read this circa 1975-1977 and think it was published in the early 70's. For some reason, I thought the authors name was Robert Leroy Parker, but an internet search turns up nothing. It is an adult, science fiction book.

Patti, can you tell us more about the hero and heroine - their jobs, why he came to the island, where is he from, interests/skills, etc.?

Could this be fantasy as opposed to science fiction?

Patti | 7 comments It has been so long, I cannot remember his job. I think he was a treasure hunter or explorer. Definitely could be considered fantasy over SF. I just remember he stumbled onto the place and there were either earthquakes threatening their existence or he had sailed over to the island, climbed around the volcano, had an earthquake and woke up in this place. A kind of hidden in plain sight kind of thing.

Can we eliminate the Doc Savage books first published in the 1933's? https://www.goodreads.com/series/4396...
For example, The Fantastic Island by Kenneth Robeson which has multiple cover images.

Patti | 7 comments Yes. This is not one of those books. I'm pretty sure it was written in the early 1970s.

Ayshe | 4720 comments One Million Centuries by Richard A. Lupoff? Reviews on amazon mention "extinct volcano" and "Kissers," deadly giant butterflies which will give an acid kiss to anyone who touches their food". It appears Robert Leroy Parker is hero's name.

Patti | 7 comments YES!!!!!!! That is the book and the cover I remember!!!!! Thank you! Thank you!!!!!!

Patti | 7 comments I knew Robert Leroy Parker was in there somewhere. I can't believe I crossed it with the main character. Thank you Ayshe!!!!!!!
