With the exception of 3 pages, this takes place in Tajikistan and moves that country from blue to orange/rust.

The Fisherman King by Kathrina Mohd Daud

Set 100% in Brunei Darussalam and turns that country green. This was a treasure that I never would have read had it not been for our countries of the world challenge.

The Clunies-Ross Cocos Chronicle by John C Clunies-Ross tells the history of the Cocos Islands by the current Clunies-Ross family member who still lives there. The Clunies-Ross family turned the island into a mixture of Scottish and Malay culture with their coconut "empire," though from what I can discern, the "empire" is mostly in their own limited worldview.

This turns Cocos (Keeling) Islands green. Since I'm doing a "Reading Globally" Sub-Challenge this summer,I am trying to help out here as best I can.

Sweet! (I knew this one sounded familiar! I read this back in 2022 and forgot to post about it in the Group Challenge thread *face palm*). Another country turned green! Nice reading!!

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14225 comments Be sure to get my post above for Paraguay too.

OMG I'm so glad you finished Paraguay! There was a book I was reading for it and it was *killing* me--now I can DNF it with a clear conscience LOL

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14225 comments LOL - I didn't much like the one I read either. Yes, hurray for putting Paraguay behind us!

Off-White by Astrid H. Roemer

This book is set about 75% in Suriname and turns this country green.

I'll note also that both of the books I read for Suriname this season were 5-stars for me. They were very different books set in completely different time periods, but I loved them both. Without this RwS challenge, I would not have found myself in front either of them.

Got it! (Sorry that took a minute, I've been away from my computer since Thursday)
And I'm so happy to hear they've been 5-star reads! I've read a fair amount of stinkers for this challenge, but the good ones are so memorable that I don't mind suffering through the stinkers to find the gold ;-)

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14225 comments I figured you'd get to it when you had time.

I am not going to be able to complete another subchallenge, but I am starting this one to help out with the Countries of the World game. My book takes place in the Marshall Islands, turning it Brown. I read:

Radiation Sounds: Marshallese Music and Nuclear Silences by Jessica A. Schwartz,

Well done, you! I’ve had a heck of a time trying to find a book to fit Marshall Islands…so glad you got us one step closer!

Stories of the Sahara by Sanmao

This takes place 100% in Western Sahara and turns that country green.

As I say in my review, I wouldn't want to visit this country, but I'm glad to have been an armchair traveler.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14225 comments Yes, go team!

I think that's the last of it for Summer for me. I've started a thriller that doesn't apply. We'll see if I have time for one here before September 1, but I sort of doubt it.

Ha ha!

I had a Martinique set up to read for BINGO as a tropical country book. I will probably replace it with one set in Djibouti.

I recently slated this one for fall!

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14225 comments Great, Karen. I'll cross it off my list. I do note that 30.1 isn't a first to post task, so more than one can read a specific book for it.

I have another book by the same author scheduled, but it has not come in through InterLibrary Loan yet. I found a mystery set inSt. Barthelemy to use for BINGO. If the Waberi ever comes in, I'll post a 30.1.

Finding Napoleon by Margaret Rodenberg

Set about 52-53% in St. Helena. I had to keep notes, hoping the segments set in France wouldn't be too much. I heaved a sigh of relief!
