Robin | 12 comments Hi,
I bought a website on Ehost and I have been trying to design it and get it up for over a week. I am not any good at this. Does anyone have a website that is easy to design? I have heard of Wix.com and Web.com but they don't look any easier. Of course, this is my first time and have no clue what I am doing. I would appreciate any ideas or suggestions you have.
Thanks,
Robingale

Heidi Angell (heidiangell) | 241 comments I love wix. It's plug and play web design. Pick your template, add pictures and text, and bam. It does take some time getting the hang of it, but was sooo much easier than learning word press (I'm doing that now for a team I'm joining and I kind of hate it.) or learning HTML to create a website from scratch.

I've seen a lot of authors who claim to have limited tech skills use Weebly and Squarespace. I've had no experience with them.

If you're looking for simpler than Wix? I guess, blogger? But the trouble with blogger is that you don't own it and can lose it at any time. I started on blogger, and when I transitioned I lost my 400 subscribers and only managed to get 64 to transfer over before blogger deleted my account. Sucked so much.

Roughseasinthemed | 60 comments Yeah, wordpress is easy peasy. Blogger used to be good (about ten years ago, because you could fiddle and customise) but now wordpress is better, although there is no fiddle option unless you pay extra so you have to choose from what's on the – free – shelf.. Plus the wordpress community is very active and easy to get into.

You can easily sort your domain name with wordpress.com – don't bother with wordpress.org.

I tried weebly but found it pretty limited.

Hi Heidi,
Thanks for your response. Why does Blogger delete your account? Just because they want to?
Thanks,
Robingale

Sam (Rescue Dog Mom, Writer, Hugger) (sammydogs) | 973 comments I've seen many different types of websites for authors. Some include a store to sell books and handmade items related to the story. How accessible is it to create an author website that both highlights your book and sells your related items using Wordpress? Thanks.

Wix was user friendly for me and my tech skills are below freezing. They have author templates that you can personalize for yourself. I'm using the free version of WIX. There's an upgrade I believe that will remove the WIX logo but their logo doesn't bother me. Happy designing!

Robin, they claim TOS, but really it only takes someone reporting your content to get it removed. Mine was removed because I transitioned to a new site that I had more control over. If it's removed, you lose your audience. Same with other social media sites. I wanted to have a funnel where I had complete control over my audience and reaching them, so I created my website and blog with an e-newsletter, all controlled by me. Do I still use social media? Sure, but my purpose is to drive my social media people to my website, to my blog, to my e-newsletter, then to buy my books.
It's easier to measure the effects of my marketing efforts, to see the traffic flow, and to build my empire ;)

HI,
Thank you. That is what I was trying to do by creating the website. I just went to Youtube and watched a video on creating a website on wordpress.com. I should have done that in the beginning. He made it look so easy. LOL Thanks for all of your help!

Dan Burley (danburleyauthor) | 112 comments I've been using Squarespace for my website, and I love it. I'd never put together a website before, but found their interface to be quite intuitive. I'm genuinely happy with my site on an aesthetic level and as far as functionality goes. It's incredibly easy to use.

Jan (perfectinnerpeace) | 3 comments There is a lot more to owning and operating a website than just designing it, hosting it, and launching. You then have to market it and navigate search engine optimization (SEO) in order to try to be found when people search for content that you can provide. If you don't work on this, it's not worth the time and cost of having a website.

Becuase of all the competition, being seen is the most challenging part of the process. As an author and owner of an ecommerce store since 2009, I can provide some reliable resources I've used if you want to contact me to shorten your learning curve.

I stand by WordPress as the best basis for your website. It's easy if you're good with computer work, but some people aren't.
