Man named Zane is killed by death and becomes death. He gets a new car/phone/earring/scythe and has to transfer souls to Heaven or Hell. He isn't very good at it, even at the end he's mediocre at best. The only rule death gives him is not to be killed because then the person who kills him or he kills (kinda fuzzy) then becomes the new death. It was an interesting book. I believe it was published in the 80s.
