I just started reading it today. Lol. I'm hoping to have it finished tonight or tomorrow. I've got lots of books to read this month and we're already halfway through! ;)
I know it's not the 20th yet but I thought I would just throw some questions out there to think about while reading. I finished the book this weekend and can't wait to discuss! :)
1. What was your initial reaction to the book? Did it hook you immediately, or take some time to get into?
2. What scene was the most pivotal for the book? How do you think the story would have changed had that scene not taken place?
3. What three words would you use to best describe this book?
4. If you could smack any of the characters upside the head, who would it be and why? (Sorry... I couldn't resist! Hehe.)
5. If you could insert yourself as a character in the book, what role would you play?
Happy reading! :)

Psssst... it's the 20th for most of the United States so I thought I would get this going. Haha.
What did everyone think about Heart of Ice? Did you like it? Love it? Thought it was just okay? Inquiring minds want to know! ;)
As for me.. I really enjoyed it! It's definitely outside of my norm. I'm liking this branching out... as long as I can find a book that captivates me... ;)
I do have to say that Rakel is a better person than I am! Time and time again, people have shunned, looked down upon and even tried to kill her, yet she cannot just let the Chosen harm them, capture them and kill them. She stands up to protect them even when they do not deserve it. I don't know if I could be as forgiving or as helpful as she is. I mean come on! Her family exiled her and yet she's still willing to go save her brother once she's learned he's been captured and they are going to kill him. Definitely a better person than I am! ;)
I did like watching her grow and learn to trust herself and her magic. She's definitely changed for the better by the end of the book. I will definitely be picking up book 2 to see how everything ends. :)
As for my answers to the above questions...
1. What was your initial reaction to the book? Did it hook you immediately, or take some time to get into? I was pleasantly surprised and hooked immediately. This is not a book I would normally read. I'm definitely a clean romance with a HEA. So to have little to no romance is different for me. But I really enjoyed it! I will for sure be reading more books by this author. I have my eye on a couple already... ;)
2. What scene was the most pivotal for the book? How do you think the story would have changed had that scene not taken place? I think when the other magic users stepped forward and offered their assistance was a huge turning point in the book. Even though they knew there was a chance that they would be shunned, they still stepped forward to help. Without them, I don't think Princess Rakel would have fared well in the rest of the book and the kingdom would definitely have been lost. It took a lot of courage for them to come forward in my opinion.
3. What three words would you use to best describe this book? Intriguing, adventurous and thought-provoking.
4. If you could smack any of the characters upside the head, who would it be and why? Colonel Farrin Graydim... I'm sorry but the man could be dense at times! He knew his leader was evil yet he still followed him. Ugh! Yes... I know he saved his life somehow and I'm sure will find out in the next book... but come on man! Open your eyes! Yeesh! Lol.
5. If you could insert yourself as a character in the book, what role would you play? Hmmm... this is a tough one. I would like to think I would be one of Rakel's unexpected friends that helps her to see her true worth. Someone who helps her to find her courage, her strength and her passion for life and for love.
Thoughts?

Question #1 I have to admit that I didn't immediately like this book. It took me a bit to really get into things and enjoy myself but I did end up really liking it and I want to read the next book.
I agree Kathy Jo, Rakel is a better person than I am. I can't imagine not becoming bitter and angry at people who would hold me captive for my whole life. To be gentle with people that tried to kill me? Yeah, probably not. I loved her for that compassion and gentleness though. She stopped people from harming but didn't kill. Rakel knew how to forgive. She is a very inspiring main character.
I loved how people slowly came into Rakel's life that she could trust. It didn't happen quickly but every time Rakel realized there was someone who believed in her, her confidence increased and she began to believe in herself. Rakel was a loyal person and she valued that in other people.
I'm not very good at answering questions so I apologize ahead of time.
Question #2 I think for me, the pivotal point in the book was when Rakel stood up for herself and recognized there were people she could trust. I think this happened on more than one occasion because this was a process for her, but those were the moments that I found myself more emotionally tied into Rakel and the story.
#3 adventurous, interesting, cold (ha)
#4 I agree that Farrin was a bit evasive and I was frustrated at how he gave so little information and his actions seemed so contradictive. It's the main reason I am so compelled to read the next book.
#5 I don't think I would want to be anyone in this book. It's too cold. I want to be the distant relative that lives on the sunny beach far, far away that the characters come to visit at some point. :)
As we have done previously, we will start the discussion on the 20th of the month. I know... I know... I am a bit late getting this posted but I blame my new job. Lol. I am finally starting to get back on track with reading! Whoop! Whoop! Hehe.
So... happy reading my fellow bookworms! Can't wait to discuss this one! :)
