This is the discussion thread for the first book of the month, or group read, for May. Please remember to use the spoiler tags where necessary. The other group read topic for this month (The Man in the High Castle) can be found here.

message 2: by Mel (new) - rated it 3 stars

Mel | 83 comments I have already read this. I found it somewhat disappointing. I wanted more story, more character development and less....ruminating. No spoilers at this point.

Tobias Langhoff (tobiasvl) | 16 comments I, on the other hand, loved it. Read it years ago. I agree that it's mostly rumination and little plot, but the atmosphere and feeling of loneliness is so good. (I actually think the George Clooney movie captured that better than the Tarkovsky one, although of course it still had its problems.)

I wanted to love it. Perhaps you need to be in the right sort of mood.

I think that's the case for any book really.

Margaret (margaret_l13) I read this book a few years ago. It was a little difficult to get into, as has been stated there was a lot of ruminating, but I found the concepts being explored really fascinating and there is some character development, albeit not very obviously.
