Hello All,I'll be moderating this discussion and look forward to sharing responses and reflections with you.
I've had a longtime interest in stereotypes and how they affect social interactions. I look forward to learning what the research says about stereotypes and, especially, what we can do to mitigate their negative effects.
How do stereotypes affect students at Bryn Mawr? Which of our students must deal with "identity contingencies" on a daily basis?
Take a look at this Forbes article. A study found that women and minority executives are penalized for promoting diversity! When women and minority execs prioritize diversity in their hiring, they are perceived to resemble negative stereotypes (cold woman, incompetent minority) and are judged negatively.
White men are not judged negatively, for the same behavior.
