This week our group member shared the book "Underground Railroad" by Colson Whitehead. This book tells the story of Cora and her journey along the Underground Railroad and her escape from slavery.
***SPOILER*** The spirited Cora, starts as a slave on a plantation in Georgia and escapes with Caesar and Lovey. Lovey becomes lost from the group and Cora kills a person in a run-in with hog-hunters. Cora experiences freedom and education, but is constantly pursued by slave hunters, especially a man named Ridgeway. Eventually she is captured and taken in Tennessee by Ridgeway. Escaping again, she finds refuge on the Valentine farm in Indiana, until again she is forced to flee. This time she heads West. This book creates a window into the journey of this single, female escaping slavery in pre-Civil War America and is quite a story!
We would love to hear your thoughts and reactions to this book or you are welcome to share your thoughts on any other book. Please join us in person at the Little Turtle Branch Library on the 2nd and 4th Monday of each month at 10:30am.
