I just finished reading Range Light part 0007: The Lighthouse Keeper.

It seems we have (view spoiler)[ alternating point of views in this book. I have a feeling that's going to be interesting. It's also nice that story keeps jumping between different time periods, so we'll get to see what happened to the lighthouse keeper and the director rather than just reading about Control and Ghost Bird. I hope the secrets of Area X will be explained in this book. I would really like to know, how Area X came to be in the first place. (hide spoiler)]

I don't know why I thought (view spoiler)[ that the lighthouse keeper was the director's dad. Somehow I got that idea when I was reading Authority. Anyway, it seems like it was the director's mom, who got trapped inside Area X, not her dad. I'm curious about how the director and Whitby will get back from Area X. Do they know how to get out or will they just get lucky and find an exit of some kind? (hide spoiler)]

I want to know (view spoiler)[ what the deal with the Light Brigade is. What are they looking for? Something seems off about them, especially Henry. (hide spoiler)]

Range Light Part 007

I don't know why I thought(view spoiler)[ I know why. because the only hint they gave us was the director in a photo with the light house guy. AND someone knowing she was from the island - I think Whitby. The last story kind of led us to assume...interesting that she's the little girl who was always around the lighthouse guy (hide spoiler)]

Okay, differing time frame story lines is interesting!

Ghost Bird and Control(view spoiler)[ they are the NOW, right?
so....last we knew they jumped in to the water
It's interesting that they are struggling for dominance - that control wants to lead and Ghost Bird refuses to follow. Interesting.
also the fish that looked like the first expedition guy - that was freaky
and finding the body in the reeds that she thinks was the moaning she heard in book one. Ugh, also totally creepy! (hide spoiler)]

Director(view spoiler)[ her POV is just fascinating. So her POV is just before Book 1, right? When she was prepping THAT expedition to leave and even before that, when she was figuring out how to get herself on the expedition

I like knowing what was happening in Area X before we first got to it. It's interesting what she knew and yet she STILL wanted to go in there. I have no idea how she and Whitby will get out - hopefully through the same front door they went in?

Also Grace's rage is a little more understanding (and Whitby losing it in book 2) now that we know a little more about what the director was doing (hide spoiler)]

Lighthouse (view spoiler)[ and he is, by far, the most interesting POV. His time frame is when the Director is a little girl and when Area X first started to happen

Ghost Bird and Control(view spoiler)[ I hate that Grace drugged her but I don't blame her I guess - Grace is terrified about what's going on
I wonder who left the boat there for them to take. The island? Grace couldn't have, it was on the wrong shore for her. Maybe she's lying about the director and what she did? (hide spoiler)]

Grace(view spoiler)[ Okay, I must be missing something here....does this mean that the Grace that Control knew was always a copy? Or does time warp in this place? how can Grace have been there 3 years?! Did she go out with the original all girl crew with the Biologist? (hide spoiler)]

Yes, I think (view spoiler)[ that Control and Ghost Bird are in the present and the others are in the past. And yes, it's much easier to understand Grace's and Whitby's behavior in Authority now, when we know a little more about what was going on at Southern Reach before Control started working there. Yes, I think (view spoiler)[ the light that went into Saul's hand started something major. I think he caught fever soon after the incident with the light, so maybe the light infected him somehow or started the process of turning him into the creature he is in Annihilation. (hide spoiler)]

How can Grace (view spoiler)[ have been on the island for three years? I'm a bit confused about this too. If she's been there for three years, how does she even know who Control is? I guess she met the biologist because she has her testament but I don't think Control was at Southern Reach three years ago. (hide spoiler)]

imagine being a live for a VERY VERY long time. A year would feel like the blink of an eye - he might sit long enough for things to grow over him and the environment to start covering him and morphing him like it is. and like it's doing to the biologist (hide spoiler)]

I really don't know, (view spoiler)[ if she was there for 30 years. I always imagined Control started working as the director right after the expedition in Annihilation. I thought it would have been a couple of years at the most since the biologist entered Area X. But well, maybe it's been longer or then time does behave differently in Area X. It's really confusing at this point. (hide spoiler)]

Does she remember everything that happened before she changed? If yes, how does she feel being stuck in that morphed body of hers? (hide spoiler)]

I agree that (view spoiler)[ it seems like Control's mother new a lot about what was going on at Southern Reach. I wonder why she was working with Lowry. What were they trying to do and why were they pushing all those expeditions to Area X? Did they know Area X was expanding? Maybe they thought they needed to find a way to fight it as soon as possible. (hide spoiler)]

Finally finished this yesterday. I don't know why it took me so long to read it. Maybe it's because I'm reading too many books at once.

Anyway, I feel like I (view spoiler)[ still don't understand everything I wished to understand at the end of the series. I still don't know how Area X came to be. I also wish they had told us, how far Area X had expanded at the end of the book. Had it expanded beyond the Southern Reach compound? Did Ghost Bird and Grace have a normal world to return to? I like it that (view spoiler)[ we got the stories of the director and the lighthouse keeper. It was interesting to learn about the early stages of Area X as well as about, how the director became the director and why she decided to join the expedition to Area X. (hide spoiler)]

I'm still not sure what (view spoiler)[ role the Light Brigade played in creating Area X. I guess Suzanne didn't necessarily do anything but Henry was obviously not human at the end of the book. (hide spoiler)]
