Graeme Rodaughan So you've just written "The End" on the last page of your book.

What next?

For me, I add the following on my Kindle version.

The End

If you loved this book, could you please write a review on Amazon

The story will continue with the next installment of The Metaframe War.

“The Dragon’s Den.”

[INSERT BLURB for next Book]

For further information on the books of The Metaframe War series, you can follow my blog on Goodreads at

Writing The Metaframe War Series

You will find details on the concepts used in the stories of The Metaframe War, my reflections on the craft of writing, snippets of draft text from upcoming books, and news of new releases. You can also use Goodreads to connect with me and ask me questions about my books and writing.

What I'm trying to do is maximize the opportunity for readers to write reviews, connect with me on goodreads and relate to the next book.

What do you do?

Quantum (quantumkatana) I would definitely do this. I'd also retroactively add a link to A Traitor's War to the backmatter of A Subtle Agency, if you haven't already done so.

Nik Krasno | 19869 comments Not sure I'd ask for reviews, but giving a glimpse at the sequel and providing a link sound like a good idea

Good stuff Graeme! I need to do something like this :)

Graeme Rodaughan I'm keen to provide a reader with every opportunity to engage with the stories and myself.

if you never ask for something, no one will ever know what you want or need.

Graeme Rodaughan Exactly Alex.

Reviews are hard to get.

Good reviews are even harder.....

I have a fairly sufficient amount of reviews: positive and negative, informative for the potential readers and for me as an author. Whoever reads a book it's good enough and I wouldn't want to prompt any additional action, but other authors do place such a reminder and I guess it works. I have nothing against it either -:)

Graeme Rodaughan I can't see a downside here. I doubt a reader who has got to the end of one of my books will be switched off by a simple, and non-obligatory request.

Matthew Williams (matthewwilliams) | 6 comments Sounds like a good idea Graeme, definitely can't see a downside mate :-)

J.J. Mainor | 2440 comments I add a section called Author's notes as sort of a behind-the-scenes look to the story. Depending on what I feel like discussing, it could be social issues that inspired certain parts, other inspiration, ideas-that-never-were, etc. Think of it like the bonus features on a DVD - for those who like the mini-documentary on "the making of..."

With 4 of the 6 books in the Freedom Reigns series, I included unrelated short stories occurring within the universe.

And like most, I include the list of other books in my catalog, but because it's extensive at this point, I don't usually update the list throughout the catalog until I've got a number of new titles to add or I find a separate reason to update a particular title.

all excellent ideas! (as an aside, you could also have a link to your amazon author's page w/links to your backlist, which, as you say, is quite extensive now. ^_^)

I did this as well with my 2nd book, and where I can (i.e. I've got material to include), I will do it for future books.

Before I went wide, I linked the book titles in the "also by..." section to the Amazon sales page. Distributing wide through someone like smashwords or draft to digital makes that problematic. It's easier to do it with Amazon since you upload directly to them instead of going through the distributor, but I would be happier if I could do it with, say, apple, where it's harder to discover books. End of the day, there's nothing stopping me from telling SW to stop distributing to apple so I could do it directly, but the idea of going through a distributor is to make it easy and consolidate payments to one source.

Ultimately it comes down to which excuses I want to accept :D

Interesting.

Ian Miller | 1857 comments I add an "Author's note" at the end, which starts off by suggesting the reader write a review, then a few explanatory statements if I felt anything was too obscure, and finally a list of my other books available at the time of publishing. The list gets bigger as the books get newer :-) I( am not convinced it does much good, but as Graeme noted, it can't hurt to ask.
