Several years back, I read a James Patterson novel that I think would be considered romantic suspense, but I can't remember the title. It's a standalone. A man falls in love with a woman, & they're both targeted by her ex, who's stalking her. I think it takes place in a small town, possibly near the ocean or a lake. I only remember something about the couple hearing something in the middle of the night, outside her home (it's their first night together). The new boyfriend goes outside to find out what it was. It's the stalker ex, but he's hiding in the dark, & I think the area is described as being sandy behind the house, like a sandy hill, or dune, or something. The woman has a dog, & I think he leaps to attack the ex. I do remember being scared for the dog's safety, but I don't remember if the dog gave his life for the woman. Maybe he did. Not sure how old the book was, or how long ago I read it. Sound familiar to anyone?

Joy, around what year did you read this book? I find "several years back" means different things to different people in this large group.
Unfortunately, I don't remember how long ago I'd read the book. My best guess is that I read it within the last 10 years.
Is that her ex-husband or ex-boyfriend?
Could the author be similar to James Patterson?
Can you tell us more about the heroine and hero - their jobs, skills/interests, how they met, family/friends, etc.?

I can't remember if the ex is an ex-husband or an ex-boyfriend. I don't remember anything else about the hero & heroine, either. I looked at all of Patterson's books on his website, & couldn't find what I was looking for, so maybe it is by a different author...wish I could remember more. I guess my head is too crammed full of the books I've read since then...
Are you sure it's by James Patterson? There is one book by Nicholas sparks 'the guardian ' that has similar plot and beach location
Yes! That's it! "The Guardian" by Nicholas Sparks...don't know how I could confuse Sparks with Patterson *shakes head doubtfully*...Thanks for solving that Kris! :)
