Doctor Manette was imprisoned for no reason and has been released and left with nothing. He is a shell of his former self and has been driven mad by all of his time in jail. Lucie, Manette's daughter, has been brought to him by a Businessman and the hope is that she will bring out the real Manette.

Some time has passed and a man named Darnay is being accused of spying on the English crown. Carton, a drunk, and a lawyer named Stryver, attempt to argue for Darnay's freedom. Carton brings Darnay to a pub and he meets Lucie for the first time.

The scene switches to France where Marquis Evrémonde, the Uncle of Darnay shows the brutality of the aristocracy at the time. He orders his driver to speed the carriage through the streets and run over a peasant child. He carelessly throws a coin to the child's family as to compensate for their loss.

[Matthew]

Darnay returns to France where he renounces his Uncles title and goes back to England. His Uncle is then killed by DeFarge the father of the peasant boy. The French revolution is being slowly planned by the Defarge's as they plan to overthrow the French aristocracy. Darney marries Dr. Manette's daughter Lucie and reveals his bloodline to the evil French lords.

The Revolution begins is France and the peasants storm the Bastille and capture the Marquis. Darnay returns the France to save his Uncle but gets imprisoned. Manette frees him but Darnay is captured again and is sentenced to death after his bloodline is revealed to the court.

Defarge, the father of peasant boy, is behind the planned execution of Darnay and seeks revenge even for his ancestors actions. Carton, a friend of Darnay, comes up with a plan where he will sacrifice his life for Darnay. He goes into the prison and trades places. Darnay escapes with Lucie and Manette leaving Carton to be executed by guillotine.
