This is the thread to discuss Missing, presumed by Susie Steiner. Your moderator is Skye

Skye | 200 comments Hello Everyone:
How many of us are there, and are you still reading the book, or do you want to begin a discussion?
Let me know.

Suzy (goodreadscomsuzy_hillard) Hi Skye - I read this last August in audio and really liked it! I'll be participating in the discussion, even though I might be missing a few details. It has stuck with me so it will be fun to see what people think.

Skye | 200 comments Wonderful; I read it about two months ago; it's interesting, isn't it, Suzy?

Suzy (goodreadscomsuzy_hillard) I just read my review and note I had forgotten that the story was told from multiple characters viewpoint. I liked that a lot when I read it. I liked DS Manon a lot also and am eager for the next book to come out. Persons Unknown is scheduled to come out May 18!

Skye | 200 comments Manon is great! She's very different, and I like her partner; I thought she was endearing and colorful, and Ms. Steiner really ushers the reader into the setting.

Maureen Carden | 125 comments Manon is a bit different because she's a bit of a PITA and not always likable. Makes a nice change.

Skye | 200 comments What's a 'PITA?" Yes, she is different and unusual. Her personality is very different when compared with other detectives in other books.

Icewineanne | 725 comments Skye wrote: "Manon is great! She's very different, and I like her partner; I thought she was endearing and colorful, and Ms. Steiner really ushers the reader into the setting."

That's what i loved about this story. Most of the domestic noir/psych thrillers being released are so formulaic. Manon's character was like a breath of fresh air. She made me laugh at various points in the story.

Skye | 200 comments How very true; Manon ran around with an eye infection nearly through the duration of the book. Steiner created a sensational character.

And i loved all of her sarcastic insights. One in the early chapters being the force's love of acronyms......made me laugh out loud.

Skye | 200 comments I am going to check that out; do you recall which chapter? She is quite unusual, isn't she?

I read a library copy when it was released so i don't have the book on hand. But her remarks are right at the end of the chapter, check the last couple of paragraphs of the first three chapters.
I'll see if the library has the ebook available & then i can tell you for sure Skye :)

Skye | 200 comments I found it!!! Chapter Two; she lists SOCO, CSI and FSI! I also love her wry commentaries about the men, the yucky men she dates; well aware they are simply losers, yet she still pursues. On the other hand, as an investigator, she is very conscientious, determined and mindful.

Maureen Carden | 125 comments PITA is pain in the ass.

Skye | 200 comments THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love knowing PITA!! I also think it's quite ironic that we had an acronym (that you and I didn't know) pop up in our thread in the context of IWAnne's comment about acronyms. :D

message 18: by Skye (new) - rated it 4 stars

Skye | 200 comments Interesting, Suzy!!!! And we have been talking about the acronyms that Manon used.

message 19: by Logan (new)

Logan Daniels (loganfdaniels) | -1 comments I haven't read it yet, but I will attempt to get through it soon. I'm in the middle of two others right now (The Killing Floor and Inherent Vice), so I'll get to Missing, Presumed soon. :-)

message 20: by Skye (new) - rated it 4 stars

Skye | 200 comments Sure hope, so , Logan, and I think we all read more than one book at a time.

Maureen Carden | 125 comments Acronyms are my life. I work for alphabet agencies.
I think Manon is a totally original. Her deep love of those she holds dear will completely define her.
I don't want to get ahead of myself, but read the next book, Persons Unknown as soon as possible.
I love how the titles come from cop nomenclature.

message 22: by Skye (new) - rated it 4 stars

Skye | 200 comments Maureen, so you must have a deep love of the language, which is something Steiner is a master of creating. Manon, Davy, and of course the very touching ending are real. The setting is brought to life, as well, don't you think?

Maureen Carden | 125 comments Oh yes, everything about the book was outstanding.

Ha! I did love language but I am beginning to lose it.

message 24: by Skye (new) - rated it 4 stars

Skye | 200 comments Sometimes when we work with language arts, we get to that point. I will say this: Missing, Presumed is an original piece of work. It abounds with local colloquialisms that I found so enticing.

Maureen Carden | 125 comments Here's a bit of a peak at the next book, Person's Unknown.

Vicki (littlequeenie29) | 1 comments I read this and enjoyed it. I love the character of Manon. That being said, I read the next book and thought it was way better. Can't wait to see what the next book, am assuming and hoping, brings!!!

I think that Maureen liked this one, too; Manon is extremely different than most protagonists, except for Lizbeth.

It is nothing like other mysteries/detective/suspense novels. This is truly unusual with a most incredible detective who dates men randomly and throws herself totally into her case to nearly a fault. It's also the language employed; it's wonderful and makes you feel as if you are part of the cast.

Skye | 200 comments I haven't read it, but Maureen loved it.

Maureen Carden | 125 comments I did indeed. Other than getting pissed at Davy, and trying to figure out where a few random characters fit in.

I will also say I did NOT expect the end.

Maureen Carden | 125 comments If we are going bit off tangent on women police detectives I will have to say Sharon Bolton's Lacey Flint in Now You See Me is my favorite for fabulous and strangeness.

I read that book as well Maureen and remember really liking it:))That's her #1 book..right?

Maureen Carden | 125 comments Yeah. It's a small series. Four books and a few short stories. Bolton's standalones are terrific.

message 44: by Skye (new) - rated it 4 stars

Skye | 200 comments Thanks Maureen and Marian. Lacey Flint series, huh? I recently bought a Sharon Bolton book, but it's not a Lacey Flint.

message 47: by Skye (new) - rated it 4 stars

Skye | 200 comments It's Blood Harvest. Have you ever heard of it?

Maureen Carden | 125 comments Flint comes after Sacrifice, Blood harvest, Awakening. All very good. As are the standalones that come after the four Flint books.
