2001 presents a complex view of technology. On one hand, as a science fiction work, it enthusiastically explores the possibility of new technologies. On the other hand, it seems to criticize unchecked technological innovation. Discuss.

Of course the main technology is the HAL 9000 computers though there certainly is a lot more than the computer but HAL is the main thing as can we trust artificial intelligence to be safe?

I agree with Kristel, HAL is the warning against technology that is so advanced it thinks and feels for itself.

Paula S (paula_s) | 220 comments I agree with Kristel and Book. There is also the example of having the technology to go to the moon and discover and dig up TMA-1 that has unforeseen consequences.

Hal going rogue was the main example. I thought it was amazing some of the things they got right in 1968 like the space station.

Agree about the warnings on AI. The Newspad is eerily similar to our current tablets, there was a lot of prescience in that novel. Or the novel has inspired the development of these tools, just like Da Vinci's drawings inspired the development of aeroplanes.
