Queens Play was the first Dunnett novel I picked up, and for the first several chapters I had no idea what was going on or who Crawford of Lymond was. I just kept reading and finally things started falling into place. After I finished it, I went back to the library, found The Game of Kings, and started the whole series properly.
I wonder if that's the better way? So many people get turned off by the first half of GoK, because of all the poetry... And the fact that you have no idea what's going on.
Queen's Play was my introduction as well, 43 years ago. I have never found a series of books to equal The Lymond Chronicles.
I started with Game of Kings, but almost gave up and ended up skimming through lots of it. Queens Play was a final chance to see why people raved about the series, and I loved it! Then carried on through the series, then straight away went back and read them all in order again :DQP is still one of my favourites...
I have a fairly high tolerance for ambiguity and as long as the writing is good and the characters are interesting, I'll stick with a difficult book longer than with one that explains everything in boring detail. But still, it's kind of remarkable that QP worked for me!
