Lauren (laurenjberman) | 2240 comments Amanda, Sebastian's sister, is obsessed with her daughter's marrying into a powerful family. What did you make of her actions in the book, especially in light of the facts that emerge about Ashworth?

Veronica (readingonthefly) | 694 comments Every time Amanda appears in these books she just re-confirms for me what a horrid person she is. But now she's hit a new low because she shows that she doesn't even care about her own children. She knows the kind of man that Ashworth is but all she cares about is securing an even higher social position for Stephanie- which she can then leach off of and use to her own advantage.

Lauren (laurenjberman) | 2240 comments While it doesn't condone her willingness to sell her daughter to the highest bidder (and in this case a malignant monster), it could be argued that Amanda is a product of her times. Marriage was seen as a business transaction to many people.

Mary Beth | 193 comments What gets me is all what she cares about is Ashworth's wealth. She has to know what a monster he is but just cares for herself and doesn't even care about what circumstances that Stephanie may go through. What kind of mother would want this monster for their daughter. She is a gold digger and is so not normal. She is such a horrible person. I would love for something bad to happen to her.

Veronica (readingonthefly) | 694 comments I'd love for something to happen to her too. At the very least, I'd love to see a scene between her and Hero where Hero gives her a verbal slap down.

As I said in another thread somewhere, Amanda is like an insect that eats its young.

Veronica (readingonthefly) | 694 comments That's an insult to the insect. ;-)

Lauren (laurenjberman) | 2240 comments Lol!

Mary Beth | 193 comments Lol!

Oh boy would I love to see Hero slap her around.

Charlene (charlenethestickler) | 1392 comments I didn't expect any of us would like Amanda at all for this decision, even if she only knew he had perverted tastes. How poor Stephanie was taken in by him enough to become pregnant was disturbing to me. She was a rebel, but I didn't think her intelligence was lacking.

I hope these threads are covered in the next book. I was hoping we'd get a little closer to Sebastian's paternity, but this story took a different turn -- a satisfying one, at that.

Veronica (readingonthefly) | 694 comments Sometimes I wonder if Sebastian is ever meant to find out who his biological father is. Maybe his lesson is that WHO he is is a product of the many people who have known and loved him, shaped him in some way rather than a product strictly of DNA. While I'm curious myself, I don't know how knowing the identity would significantly change anything about the story at this point. But perhaps my imagination is just too limited, lol.

Lauren (laurenjberman) | 2240 comments I agree, Veronica. But I still want to KNOW!

It was telling in that passage where her father shares with Sebastian that she's just like his mother, a bitter and unpleasant woman. I was blown away, too, when he declared that Stephanie wasn't Wilcox's daughter. What a hypocrite. Maybe that's why she's anxious to have her marry "well." Lots of sordid secrets in her past.

But, to deliver her daughter to someone she knows is depraved tells me she doesn't care enough for Stephanie. Her whole life is about status.

Yes, that was a very interesting conversation.

Veronica (readingonthefly) | 694 comments Especially since Sebastian always remembers her as the laughing, smiling Countess.

I thought Hendon was referring to his mother, Sebastian's grandmother.

Veronica (readingonthefly) | 694 comments I'm sure you're right. I read this awhile ago so my memory is off.

Angela | 155 comments I feel like Amanda is a product partly of her times, but she's just so bitter about everything. I just don't like the idea that she would marry her daughter to a monster. But then how much does she know he is a monster? Sebastian kept referring to an episode when he was at university about how bad Ashworth is. Others only know who depraved he is from what Sebastian discovered in the course of the investigation.
