I’m not sure why I continue to enjoy this series. The murders are always so gruesome. In this installment, a large number of London’s street children have been disappearing. When Paul Gibson’s expert autopsies reveal that they have been tortured and raped before dying, Sebastian St. Cyr, Viscount Devlin, endangers himself to defend the forgotten innocents.
And that’s why, why I continue to listen to these books; the righteous fight of good over evil. I enjoy the lives of the continuing characters. They fight their personal demons as well as their physical enemies. The historical settings are rich. I always learn something from these books. In this case I learned something about the Marquis de Sade and the political commentary buried in his disgusting text. I also continue to appreciate Harris’ interesting author’s notes and Davina Porter’s outstanding interpretation. I’m so glad there are more books to come.
