G.G. (ggatcheson) | 2491 comments It takes but a few minutes to drink a coffee. You can't really function without socks. And I doubt you have a hundred pairs of socks either. You probably buy them as you need new ones and not because one color stroke your fancy. I don't know about others, but I a greeting card is either as gift replacement or to accompany a gift, but either way, it fills a need. You feel better for not forgetting your mom's birthday for example. A book takes many hours to read for most of us.

Would you buy anything just so you can say you bought it even if cheap? I doubt it. People who read actually also buy books. Books they know they will read, not just a book to buy a book. There are millions of books. Not just yours, not just mine. People aren't cheap. They just buy something they will read. It happens it is not yours nor mine. Might be from a traditional published author. Could be from another SIA member. It doesn't mean they are cheap because they don't buy ours.

Martin Wilsey | 447 comments I actually made the fist book in my scifi series $0.99 permanently. It makes it easy for people to take a risk. With a 406 page book it's good value.

Add the fact that it's not half bad and people buy the follow two books.

I rarely buy greeting cards and only buy socks when I need them. Coffee, yes, a couple times a week, but I don't devote hours of time just to drink it.

With books, there are millions of authors out there with tons of titles to choose from. People are buying them. Just because they didn't buy yours or mine today doesn't mean they aren't out there buying books.

I do buy books, mostly Indie, mostly from members of this group. I spent fifty dollars one day earlier this month on Indie books from this group. It's not that those of us who do buy Indie books are being "difficult" and our wallets are sealed tight against your book, but there are only so many I can afford and only so many I can read.

As a reader, all I can say is, focus on how you can get my attention and how your product will entertain, enlighten, or inform me rather than focusing on my wallet.

Christina McMullen (cmcmullen) Simply put: people will buy what they want when the fancy strikes them. Be it books or socks.

Regardless, we have already had many threads on the subject of why books sell or don't sell. Two are pinned to the top of this folder. This one will be locked.
