Nick sat at the end of the hospital bed that held Gatsby's unmoving body, Nick didn't know why he felt a twinge of guilt. It wasn't his fault that it happened, he had work that day, he couldn't stay and comfort Gatsby all day like he had wanted to. Nick sighed and fiddled with his fingers, he had apologized over and over again to Jay's unconscious body until his throat was hoarse and the nurse got him a cup of water. Nick was mostly angry about the whole thing, not at Jay not at himself, but at Wilson. If the man had dealt with the issue properly, then Jay wouldn't be laying in bed with a bullet wound in the middle of his torso, he'd be up and moving around with Nick following him around like a lost puppy. Nick sighed softly and reached out to gently touch Jay's leg, he been doing that a lot since he was told to come to the hospital by the doctor. He decided to walk over to the side of Jay's bed and he lightly touched the wound before taking his hand away in worry that he'd hurt the man below him, he shook his head and touched Jay's arm, he needed to shower since he's been here all night, "I am sorry I wasn't there," Nick murmured softly to Jay before he began to walk over to the door.

Jay knew his friend was close by. He had heard his voice through the delirium of his drug induced coma. He wanted to speak, but his mouth wouldn't move. He wanted to lift his hand but it felt as though he was strapped down, even though he knew it was absurd. He had been in these moments of being awake on and off for....he had no way to tell how long it had been. It could have been hours or days.
When Jay felt his friend seemed to be leaving him he mad another attempt to reach out, it was barely a grunt but it was the best he could manage as his eyes fluttered as he tried to force them open to see his friend. He wasn't totally sure what had happened to him, it was largely a blur to him. A blur of pain and red, he needed to know what had happened to him, and he knew Nick was the best to tell him. Daisy hadn't come, she hadn't called and he hadn't felt her by his side as he lay there in that hospital bed.

Nick spun around when he heard what seemed to be a grunt, he walked back over to Jay and looked down to see his eyes fluttering open, he gave the man a gentle smile. " Hey," Nick said softly, he sat in the chair beside the hospital bed, he would shower later, right now he knew for sure that Jay would need him, either to tell him what had happened the night before or for something else. Nick was happy that Jay was managing to try and open his eyes, it was hard seeing Jay like this, so vulnerable.

Jay coughed and tried to clear his throat so he could talk to his friend. His throat was hoarse and burnt a bit as he tried to talk. He managed to open his eyes and look up at his friend. He looked exhausted, despite the fact that he was the one laying in a hospital bed he still frowned at his friend in concern, coughing again as he tried to talk again, wanting to voice his concerns for the man. But he couldn't yet, his mouth was dry and he could barely swallow. He shook his head slightly in frustration, feeling helpless angered him.

Nick just sat there and smiled slightly, he saw how concerned Jay looked and chuckled, " You're in a hospital bed and you're worried about me," Nick said softly, he shook his head. " I'm fine Gatsby, I promise, just tired from waiting for you to wake up," Nick continued before reaching for the cup of water the nurse brought this morning for Nick, the man hadn't touched it. " Here, sit up and take a drink of water, your throat must be burning and dry," Nick said softly as he set it aside for a moment to help Jay sit up.

Jay sat up slightly with the help of his friend and devoured the water that was in the cup, he coughed again and groaned in pain softly. He laid back. "Thank you," he croaked as he settled back against the pillows. "How did it happen? How did I end up here?" He asks as he closes his eyes again. He was already exhausted from just the slight effort.

" According to one of your butlers, you had been swimming yesterday evening when a man came to the house and shot you point blank in the back, it was Wilson who shot you I soon discovered, and well you after a brief bout of shock I managed to call a ambulance," Nick explained as he helped Jay lay back. He looked up when a nurse came to do her hourly check up, " Oh! He's awake, I'll go fetch his doctor," The nurse said before Nick waved her away with annoyance. " It was a scary experience, I'm glad you hadn't..." Nick started speaking again after the nurse left, but he stopped at the end not wanting to think about what could have happened.

Jay opens his eyes again to look at his friend. "It seems that I owe you my life Old Sport, thank you for your actions." He lifted his hand and looked at the needle that was taped into his vein, sighing softly and running his fingers through his hair as his strength started to return as the drugs subsided. "I must be quite a mess." He mutters and flinched. "Daisy?" He asked softly.

Nick softly chuckled, " No need to thank me Gatsby, I would have done the same for anyone," Nick said as he rested back against the chair, he watched as the drugs began to subside and Jay began to move more easily. Nick gulped when Gatsby said Daisy's name, she had left hours after Jay had gotten shot and Nick tried calling her many times, but she never answered. " Gatsby, hours before you got shot, Daisy left with Tom and their daughter, I've been trying to call her but she's not answering," Nick explains softly.

Gatsby closed his eyes as a totally different kind of pain ripped through him. She had left Him. Her love was far too fickle to survive in the world he could have created for them. "Thank you for trying." He choked out when he was enough in control of himself not to cry. He had spent so long waiting for Daisy, loving her from afar that perhaps he didn't ever truly know her.

Nick placed a comforting hand on Gatsby's arm, " You're welcome Jay," Nick said before being gently pushed to away by a nurse so that the Doctor could look over Gatsby and determine if he was well enough to head on home or if he should stay another night or two. Nick watched from afar, deciding to try and call Daisy again, he walked over to the phone settled on the small table far from the hospital bed and tried to call Daisy's number, hoping that she'd pick up.

Gatsby closed his eyes as the nurse and doctor checked him out. He didn't take in anything they said to him. He just wanted to sit with his friend and find out exactly what had happened while he was unconscious. Why hadn't Daisy come? Why couldn't he ever be good enough for her?

Nick couldn't help but feel his heart break a little after he didn't receive an answer, he looked over and saw Jay with his eyes closed, the doctors were just talking aimlessly, not even bothering to make sure Jay was paying attention to what they were saying. " Alright! Alright! If you're not going to do your jobs correctly, then get out!" Nick demanded, shooing the doctors and nurses out of the hospital room, closing the door behind them. " Good riddance, can't even do their jobs right, are you feeling alright Gatsby?" Nick said cautiously and gently as he came over and sat down beside the bed again.

Jay didn't open his eyes again just yet. There was too much pain in them to be shared. He needed time to heal in more than one way. "Doctors only care that you heal and get out of their way once you have. They may save lives but they don't always know how to value them Old Sport." He opens his eyes again when he felt enough in control. "The man who shot me, where is he?"

Nick smiled slightly, then he frowned when Gatsby mentioned Wilson. " The man, Wilson, he shot himself after he shot you," Nick answered, wincing at the memory of spotting the man laying dead on the ground in front of Gatsby's pool, with a gunshot wound to his head. He focused back on Gatsby.

Jay frowns. "A shame. for a man who was told so many lies to die without learning any of the truth. I too should have died in that pool. I felt it, and i went to a place in my mind that was warm. I was at peace. Then i was here."

Nick couldn't help but think about what Gatsby said about Wilson, it was the truth wasn't it? It was sad that Wilson had to die before hearing the truth about his wife's death. But when Gatsby spoke that he should've died in the pool, Nick became rigid and he looked at Gatsby with slight anger, " You should have not died in that pool and to think that I thought you would be grateful that I saved your life," Nick said, his voice deep and filled with tension. Nick felt absolutely hurt that Gatsby would even say such a thing, especially in front of him.

Jay turned to his friend and frowned. "No old sport, I do not regret the fact that you saved my life, but I did not expect to survive. And what comes now is going to be incredibly difficult." He closes his eyes again and moves slightly, wincing as it pulled on his stitches even with the slightest movement.

Nick sighed softly. " Take a rest Gatsby, you'll be needing it if you are to leave tonight or tomorrow," Nick said before settling down in his chair and relaxing himself. He felt a little hurt still for what Gatsby, but instead of being overly sensitive about it, he took his own advice he gave to Gatsby and decided to rest, he had been up for hours and his eyes hurt.

Jay starts to relax as more painkillers took effect. "You don't have to stay Old Sport, I'm safe now. You deserve a better bed then that chair." He yawns and runs his fingers through his hair.

" Nonsense," was all that Nick managed before he closed his eyes and took a few deep shaky breaths that rattled his chest. He gripped the chair rather tightly before he relaxed and fell into a peaceful, gentle, sleep.

Jay stood by his hospital bed and zipped up the leather carry case someone, probably Nick, had had beside his bed with his clothes and things inside. He was glad to be leaving this sterile space but was unsure what awaited him once he did leave.

Nick had gone home and showered, slipping into clean clothes. He had now come back and was waiting for Gatsby out in the waiting room so that he could drive the man back home. Nick didn't know what awaited Gatsby once he was out of the hospital, most of New York thought that Gatsby was a murderer and had killed Myrtle. Nick sighed and shook his thoughts from his head before looking towards the hallway where Gatsby would soon be emerging from.

Jay walked slowly and was careful not to pull on his stitches as much, which took some of the grace out of his movements. He smiles at his friend. "They reckon I am safe to leave. Shall we, old sport?"

Nick smiled lightly when Gatsby spoke, " We shall," Nick replied as he began walking towards the exit. His thoughts returned as they made their way to his car.

As they stepped out into the fresh air Gatsby sighed. "What waits for me in this world isn't the world I built for myself anymore Old Sport." He muttered before continuing on.

Nick nodded in response, " I know Gatsby, I know," Nick responded, his eyes flickered over to Gatsby for just a moment before he looked over at his car, pulling out his car keys.

"Thank you for being my link." He told him as he went with him to the car, he got in carefully so he did not pull his stitches or further injure himself.

Nick nodded, " You're welcome Gatsby, I'll always be here, possibly," Nick said softly as he got into the drivers place, " Buckle up Gatsby," Nick murmured.
