I think the author just wanted us to be shocked by the twist. I totally bought into the idea that Roulet had been set up by Reggie Campo. I was shocked when we learned that not only was Roulet guilty of the assault, but he was also a murderer.
There was something off about him from the start. I couldn't figure out why he wanted Mickey for his attorney when he could obviously afford a real shark from a larger more influential firm. Consequently, I wasn't shocked that he was revealed to be a serial killer.
I agree with you both. While he seemed odd, I believed him to be innocent, almost up to the point where it was definitively revealed. While I wasn't shocked, I was a little caught off guard.
