Genre: Science Fiction / Technological thriller
Release year: Sometime between 2004-2010
Format: I read it as a soft back
Audience: Adult Fiction

The book is set in the modern world (around the early 2000s), I believe it is written by an American author.

---------- Plot ---------------
A man's brother works in a company that discovers a portal. From this portal
gifts are given to the company from another world. These gifts give the reciever knowledge on how to creat certain things and is used by the man's brother and the company to create a computer / software package (I think an operating system) that is self evolving. The brother names the computer / software by colors. Every time it evolves a new color is adopted to name the software / computer. I think it may be something like white box > yellow box > Green box.....

When the man's brother goes missing the man goes to the company and discovers what his brother had been working on. The computer was so powerful / advanced that it could create a cure for cancer or index all the locations of all individual grass blades of the world at any time. His learning of his brother's work takes him into a world of danger and competing parties who want the software / computer.

Thanks a ton for any help :)

best,

Joel

Joel_senior, where is the portal located? Was is referred to as a "portal"?

The Breach by Patrick Lee also has an alien portal that extrudes "gifts", but the rest of the plot sounds different.

You're welcome. Shows it pays to guess sometimes. (I don't recall the colored boxes. There's a memorable scene in Zurich about 2/3 into the story.)
