What is a BOM (Book of the Month)?
At NRBC we use a more structured approach to our BOMs. We have a discussion leader and a reading date is set to start the book. A reading schedule is posted prior to the start date and discussion questions are posted each day regarding that section of the book.

Writing a day's worth of discussion questions = 40 points
Participating in a current BOM (participating in discussion) = 20 points
NOTE: We will accept one team member per book per team for writing a days DQs. If, by three days prior to the BOM starting, we don't have enough volunteers to write all DQs, then we will let more than one team member per team write questions. If we have more people than days sign up (prior to 3 days before start date) we will randomise the volunteers to determine those who can write
Thanks to everyone who volunteered for DQs! As we had more volunteers than days, we have randomized you all and allocated you as per the post above
Please let us know if that date doesn't work for you.

1. ALTHOUGH THIS BOOK WAS ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED IN OCTOBER 2013 I WAS AMAZED WITH THE OPENING PAGES DESCRIBING THE CIRCLE'S CAMPUS IN LIGHT OF NEWS REPORTS THIS WEEK OF THE OPENING OF APPLE'S AMAZING NEW HEADQUARTERS! WHAT ARE YOUR EXPECTATIONS IN REGARDS TO THIS BOOK AND HOW MUCH OF WHAT HAS HAPPENED IN THE REAL LIFE TECH WORLD DO YOU THINK WILL INFLUENCE THE PLOT LINE OF THE STORY?
I wasn't just thinking about Apple's new campus when I was reading the descriptions, but of Google's campus as well. They have all of that as well and the shuttle buses, etc. And with when the book was published I was thinking it was more influenced by Google than Apple. Although the god-like reverence of the 'Wise Men' made me think of Steve Jobs and all of the tech products also made me think of Apple so I guess it's a bit of a blend between the 2 companies influencing the story.
I'm expecting to be a wee bit creeped out by this book and how much of our lives are probably tracked without us really being aware of it. And I expect tech developments (both actual and those still theoretical in real life) to play an important part of the plot.
2. INITIAL IMPRESSIONS OF THE MAJOR CHARACTERS MAE AND ANNIE? DO YOU GET THE FEELING THAT THEIR RELATIONSHIP IS NOT AN EQUITABLE ONE AND HOW DO YOU THINK IT MAY CHANGE AS THE STORY PROGRESSES?
Mae seems like a typical recent college grad trying to figure out what to do with her life. And trying to balance that with older parents of questionable health.
Annie, not sure what to think about her. I found the cubicle prank funny but then things with her just seemed weird. In the couple years since they both graduated, it seems strange she's already part of the Top 40. But I guess that's possible. And how she told Frank's personal business was just not cool. How she wanted to keep Mae away from him was also a bit strange. Something is off, just not sure what.
And no, I don't think the relationship is equitable. I also find it very strange Annie never met Mae's parents in all the time they were roommates in college.
3. DO YOU LIKE THE CONTINUING FORMAT OF THE NOVEL AND THE LACK OF DEFINED CHAPTERS? WHY TO YOU THINK DAVE EGGERS HAS WRITTEN THE BOOK THIS WAY?
Mixed feelings about it. Kinda hard to find a good stopping point on my Nook. But I don't think the spacing is the same as it would be in the real book. The breaks aren't that obvious.
Maybe he did it that way because he wanted it to just feel continuous, like real life. And not broken up into predefined sections. Like the decent into cult madness will be harder to see and be more gradual without the defined breaks. But really I have no idea.
4. MAE AND FRANK? WHAT DO YOU THINK FRANK'S CONTRIBUTION TO THE STORY LINE WILL BE? DO YOU SEE ANY RELATIONSHIP EVOLVING BETWEEN THEM?
There is going to be something there I think eventually. Not sure it'll be of romantic nature or not. But trusted friends at least. For some reason I see him as being important to her realizing what's really going on at The Circle. Whatever it is.
5. BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR AND IF SOMETHING IS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE IT PROBABLY IS ARE TWO SAYINGS THAT IMMEDIATELY SPRING TO MIND WHEN READING THIS BOOK. AT THIS EARLY STAGE WHERE ARE YOU IMAGINING THE STORY IS HEADING?
I see it heading into creepy cult town where you don't realize they have complete control over your life until it's too late. And then trying to break free of it is next to impossible.
6. DOES THIS BOOK REMIND YOU OF ANY OTHERS YOU HAVE READ OR ARE YOU FINDING THE STORY FRESH AND ORIGINAL?
It's not reminding me of any book I've read. Or at least not recently.

It's not reminding me of any book I've read. Or at least not recently.

WHAT ARE YOUR EXPECTATIONS IN REGARDS TO THIS BOOK AND HOW MUCH OF WHAT HAS HAPPENED IN THE REAL LIFE TECH WORLD DO YOU THINK WILL INFLUENCE THE PLOT LINE OF THE STORY?
It seems to be influenced a lot by our current tech world, and I don't think we are very far off from most of this happening in real life. Who knows maybe it is already happening and we don't know it.
2. INITIAL IMPRESSIONS OF THE MAJOR CHARACTERS MAE AND ANNIE? DO YOU GET THE FEELING THAT THEIR RELATIONSHIP IS NOT AN EQUITABLE ONE AND HOW DO YOU THINK IT MAY CHANGE AS THE STORY PROGRESSES?
Mae seems to be acting typical of someone obtaining their "dream job". Both Mae and Annie seem rather obsessed with social media. Annie says to Mae "I'll be watching you...and every time you do something great I'll be making sure everyone knows about it so you have to stay [in CE] too long." I found this more creepy than endearing. It reminds me of our current generation constantly posing accomplishments on social media because they want a pat on the back for their work. I actually agree with the point of view of Mercer.
3. DO YOU LIKE THE CONTINUING FORMAT OF THE NOVEL AND THE LACK OF DEFINED CHAPTERS? WHY TO YOU THINK DAVE EGGERS HAS WRITTEN THE BOOK THIS WAY?
I didn't think I would like not having chapter breaks in the story, but I'm finding that it is encouraging me to read in bigger chunks because there's not a defined break point.
I don't have a definite answer for why Eggers wrote this way, maybe to make it seem like a constant stream, the way social media seems to be set up. You could scroll on different social media sites forever and it seems to take forever to "see everything".
4. MAE AND FRANK? WHAT DO YOU THINK FRANK'S CONTRIBUTION TO THE STORY LINE WILL BE? DO YOU SEE ANY RELATIONSHIP EVOLVING BETWEEN THEM?
I don't care for this relationship, but I read ahead. (view spoiler)
I agree with Judith, it seems like some sort of cult. I found it disturbing when Bailey got up to do his presentation and he talks about installing cameras in his mother's house without her knowledge.
6. DOES THIS BOOK REMIND YOU OF ANY OTHERS YOU HAVE READ OR ARE YOU FINDING THE STORY FRESH AND ORIGINAL?
It does not remind me of any other books I've read, but it does remind me of a movie I recently watched called Snowden.

I actually hadnt seen anything about Apples new headquarters, just looked it up and it seriously sounds so similar! It did remind me like Judith said of stuff I have read before about the Google headquarters.
I think it can be very similar to technological advances in real life, the lack of privacy creeps me out.
2. INITIAL IMPRESSIONS OF THE MAJOR CHARACTERS MAE AND ANNIE? DO YOU GET THE FEELING THAT THEIR RELATIONSHIP IS NOT AN EQUITABLE ONE AND HOW DO YOU THINK IT MAY CHANGE AS THE STORY PROGRESSES?
I think Mae really feels like she owes Annie a lot for getting her that job. I would like to know how Annie started working there straight out of college and in a few years got to be at the top, its a bit odd. I think they care for each other but I just really find Annie a bit weird, I get a weird vibe from her.
3. DO YOU LIKE THE CONTINUING FORMAT OF THE NOVEL AND THE LACK OF DEFINED CHAPTERS? WHY TO YOU THINK DAVE EGGERS HAS WRITTEN THE BOOK THIS WAY?
I like it, I think the story flows really well and so far it hasnt given me the feeling that its dragging along or that it needs a break.
4. MAE AND FRANK? WHAT DO YOU THINK FRANK'S CONTRIBUTION TO THE STORY LINE WILL BE? DO YOU SEE ANY RELATIONSHIP EVOLVING BETWEEN THEM?
I think that they could end up trusting each other and maybe he knows something about The Circle and is waiting to see how she fits it and how she likes it before he tells her what is really going on? I get the feeling that they will be working together on something.
I get the cult vibe as well. I get the feeling that she is going to lose all her privacy/home relationships and will get sucked in to the campus maybe without realizing it at first.
6. DOES THIS BOOK REMIND YOU OF ANY OTHERS YOU HAVE READ OR ARE YOU FINDING THE STORY FRESH AND ORIGINAL?
It doesnt really remind me of anything Ive recently read. It does remind me of eutopian novels where society is controlled and always watched by technology but the campus/work idea seems interesting and different.

WHAT ARE YOUR EXPECTATIONS IN REGARDS TO THIS BOOK AND HOW MUCH OF WHAT HAS HAPPENED IN THE REAL LIFE TECH WORLD DO YOU THINK WILL INFLUENCE THE PLOT LINE OF THE STORY?
I'm expecting to be creeped out by a plausible extension of the real world. I do think the real life tech world will influence the plot line as I imagine the premise of the book is to make us think about the internet/social media/privacy and the consequences of letting things go too far.
2. INITIAL IMPRESSIONS OF THE MAJOR CHARACTERS MAE AND ANNIE? DO YOU GET THE FEELING THAT THEIR RELATIONSHIP IS NOT AN EQUITABLE ONE AND HOW DO YOU THINK IT MAY CHANGE AS THE STORY PROGRESSES?
I do wonder if Annie likes having Mae feel beholden to her. The back story was interesting, explaining her initial loyalty; and now Mae has another tie to Annie with her gratitude for getting her the job.
The trick Annie played on Mae with her desk wasn't nice - and with The Circle being such a "nice" place it's an early hint that all is not what it seems.
I'm not sure what will happen to their relationship.
3. DO YOU LIKE THE CONTINUING FORMAT OF THE NOVEL AND THE LACK OF DEFINED CHAPTERS? WHY TO YOU THINK DAVE EGGERS HAS WRITTEN THE BOOK THIS WAY?
I don't really mind if there are chapters or not. I'm used to Terry Pratchett not using them, and if it's good enough for him...
I hadn't thought of it before, but Ashley's idea that it may be like the constant scroll of social media is a good point.
4. MAE AND FRANK? WHAT DO YOU THINK FRANK'S CONTRIBUTION TO THE STORY LINE WILL BE? DO YOU SEE ANY RELATIONSHIP EVOLVING BETWEEN THEM?
I think a relationship is possible, but could well be secondary to a different plot. Mainly, when I think of Frank, I'm thinking about chips in bone, and how much can be sold on the basis of safety. Shudder.
I imagine things will get out of hand. Definitely a cult that you can't opt out of. I can see Mae's father's illness becoming important.
6. DOES THIS BOOK REMIND YOU OF ANY OTHERS YOU HAVE READ OR ARE YOU FINDING THE STORY FRESH AND ORIGINAL?
I can't think of any direct parallels, but the notion of being constantly watched is screaming 1984 and Big Brother, and the casual display of power by referring to the EU etc. as if they were irrelevant is not boding well. I really hope (view spoiler)

1. WHAT ARE YOUR EXPECTATIONS IN REGARDS TO THIS BOOK AND HOW MUCH OF WHAT HAS HAPPENED IN THE REAL LIFE TECH WORLD DO YOU THINK WILL INFLUENCE THE PLOT LINE OF THE STORY?
Like other readers I was reminded of Google, not only their HQ but also the idea of a single account for all your online activity. Of course the reality is not quite as extreme but still hits pretty close to home. And another real life tech world analogy that springs to mind is Edward Snowden controversy.
2. INITIAL IMPRESSIONS OF THE MAJOR CHARACTERS MAE AND ANNIE? DO YOU GET THE FEELING THAT THEIR RELATIONSHIP IS NOT AN EQUITABLE ONE AND HOW DO YOU THINK IT MAY CHANGE AS THE STORY PROGRESSES?
Mae seems a typical greenhorn, I'm really curious how her character will develop and grow.
Word “brainwashed” comes to mind in regard to Annie :). To me she seems to be under the heavy influence of company policies and philosophy and I can see her choosing it instead of her friendship with Mae if she’s required to pick a side. I hope I’m wrong though.
3. DO YOU LIKE THE CONTINUING FORMAT OF THE NOVEL AND THE LACK OF DEFINED CHAPTERS? WHY TO YOU THINK DAVE EGGERS HAS WRITTEN THE BOOK THIS WAY?
I don't really have a preference, but I feel like with this format I’m motivated to go on reading instead of stopping at the end of the chapter and doing something else :).
4. MAE AND FRANK? WHAT DO YOU THINK FRANK'S CONTRIBUTION TO THE STORY LINE WILL BE? DO YOU SEE ANY RELATIONSHIP EVOLVING BETWEEN THEM?
I’m a little disturbed by Frank to be honest. I feel bad for him because of his personal history, obviously, but I think it influenced his dedication to fight abduction to the point of obsession. I can see him willing to go too far and cross all kinds of lines that can do quite a bit of harm.
As for his relationship with Mae, I can see them starting something but there’s a good chance that his “obsession” will get in the way of it.
I had to suspend my disbelief during Bailey’s presentation when everyone in the company was so willingly on board with such an extreme idea of transparency. I imagine there will be a change of heart once the observer becomes the observed. The whole time during Mae’s kayaking trip I had a feeling that I wasn't the only one watching. I expect there will be a realization that things aren’t as blissful as they look and attempt at resistance.
6. DOES THIS BOOK REMIND YOU OF ANY OTHERS YOU HAVE READ OR ARE YOU FINDING THE STORY FRESH AND ORIGINAL?
I was reminded of 1984 for sure, especially during Bailey’s presentation and all the “I’ll be watching you” remarks. And also Brave New World with endless conveniences, parties and activities that seem to be designed for the employees' benefit but may very well be distractions from what's really going on.

1. I think what is happening in the real techworld had a large influence on the plot of this book. So far the story reads as a warning to not get caught up in the technology, because you could be giving away a lot of yourself.
2. I like Mae, she seems to care a lot for the people around her especially her parents. I do not like Annie and I don't trust her or how she got Mae the job at The Circle I think there is going to be a big price to pay for Mae. I really didn't like the prank Annie pulled on Mae on Mae's first day at work, it is just not something you do to a friend. I think the relationship between Mae and Annie will change, I think that is already happening.
3. I don't mind the lack of chapters except that it makes it difficult with the reading schedule.
4. I think Frank will be the romantic interest.
5. I'm not going to asnwer this. I saw the trailor for the movie yesterday and I think it may have given a bit away of the book. It did look interesting and the trailor made me want to read this novel even more. I'm going to see the film when it's playing in the theaters an I've finished the book.
6. 1984 comes to mind.

Oh wow I had no idea there was a movie! I will watch it for sure, I saw Emma Watson is playing Mae and I love her!
Elena wrote: " The whole time during Mae’s kayaking trip I had a feeling that I wasn't the only one watching."
I felt the exact same way!! I was half expecting her to notice a camera or someone at work to mention the kayaking!

WHAT ARE YOUR EXPECTATIONS IN REGARDS TO THIS BOOK AND HOW MUCH OF WHAT HAS HAPPENED IN THE REAL LIFE TECH WORLD DO YOU THINK WILL INFLUENCE THE PLOT LINE OF THE STORY?
--I don't really know what to expect. The movie trailers don't really give much information as to what it's really about, and the book blurb doesn't really either. I've seen some of my friends DNF or low-star this one, and others have rated it really high. So I'm hoping I'm on the high-star list LOL
2. INITIAL IMPRESSIONS OF THE MAJOR CHARACTERS MAE AND ANNIE? DO YOU GET THE FEELING THAT THEIR RELATIONSHIP IS NOT AN EQUITABLE ONE AND HOW DO YOU THINK IT MAY CHANGE AS THE STORY PROGRESSES?
--Annie is intriguing. I feel like she's got different intentions that we've seen so far. I'm not sure though. She did take care of Mae in the past. I don't really have much of an impression of Mae at all yet. I see her caring for her parents, and I see her trying to do a good job at work, and I see her being appreciative of the opportunity. All of those things seem to indicate that she's a good person, at least on some level. But she could be an unreliable narrator.
I agree that it seems like Annie and Mae's relationship is a little uneven. Maybe Annie sees Mae as a project?
3. DO YOU LIKE THE CONTINUING FORMAT OF THE NOVEL AND THE LACK OF DEFINED CHAPTERS? WHY TO YOU THINK DAVE EGGERS HAS WRITTEN THE BOOK THIS WAY?
I think it makes it much harder to read. It's harder to put it down for life reasons and have to come back and figure out where in the flow you stopped. I dunno why he would do it. I think it's a little obnoxious, really. But for some reason, I am still interested and all we've seen is WORK stuff, which is weird because I read to escape thinking about work.
4. MAE AND FRANK? WHAT DO YOU THINK FRANK'S CONTRIBUTION TO THE STORY LINE WILL BE? DO YOU SEE ANY RELATIONSHIP EVOLVING BETWEEN THEM?
--I think it's still too early to put a label on it... but I'm concerned he's going to be the cliched "she gets close to him and something happens to him that makes her start to question what's going on" plot device. If so, I'll be sad, because I kinda like the bumbling dude so far. I'm also worried about the "nice bumbling guy is really a bad bad bad guy" trope.
--I can't even formulate a guess at this point. The company does so many things that I can't even pinpoint anything that gives me pause - OTHER THAN the whole "we can put cameras everywhere now and we want to see EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE"... privacy issues seem to be moot to this guy... and that's a little creepy.
6. DOES THIS BOOK REMIND YOU OF ANY OTHERS YOU HAVE READ OR ARE YOU FINDING THE STORY FRESH AND ORIGINAL?
It reminds me of some movies I've seen... but nothing I can name... just an overall "I've seen similar" vibe!

YES, I agree. Even though its been decades since I've actually read it , this book immediately reminded me of a 21st century version of 1984.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS SET 1

WHAT ARE YOUR EXPECTATIONS IN REGARDS TO THIS BOOK AND HOW MUCH OF WHAT HAS HAPPENED IN THE REAL LIFE TECH WORLD DO YOU THINK WILL INFLUENCE THE PLOT LINE OF THE STORY?
I didn't know about the new Apple headquarters, though that is a bizarre coincidence! The setting made me think of Google headquarters, actually, because I've heard tale of what an awesome tech place it is to work. I do think the story will be influenced by the goings-on in the tech world of 2013 but I'm not sure how much it will affect the plot line.
2. INITIAL IMPRESSIONS OF THE MAJOR CHARACTERS MAE AND ANNIE? DO YOU GET THE FEELING THAT THEIR RELATIONSHIP IS NOT AN EQUITABLE ONE AND HOW DO YOU THINK IT MAY CHANGE AS THE STORY PROGRESSES?
I like Mae! She reminds me a lot of myself after I graduated from college and found myself working at a dead-end job. Thankfully, I escaped it, as well. I'm not a huge fan of Annie, however. She comes off as really abrasive and kind of a jerk. Annie seems like the type that will stab Mae in the back if she starts climbing too high, too fast.
3. DO YOU LIKE THE CONTINUING FORMAT OF THE NOVEL AND THE LACK OF DEFINED CHAPTERS? WHY TO YOU THINK DAVE EGGERS HAS WRITTEN THE BOOK THIS WAY?
I do like it, actually. It makes it really easy to get lost in the book without those mental stops. And I don't know if he had a specific reason. From what I've read of Dave Eggers, he seems a bit quirky in his book writing style. Maybe it's just author's preference with no specific reasoning.
4. MAE AND FRANK? WHAT DO YOU THINK FRANK'S CONTRIBUTION TO THE STORY LINE WILL BE? DO YOU SEE ANY RELATIONSHIP EVOLVING BETWEEN THEM?
Meh, I haven't seen enough of them together to really have an opinion on "Mae and Frank". I think Frank will be playing a big role in the book, though, since he's shown up quite a bit already. As for a relationship... I'm not seeing it.
I have no earthly idea, lol. I sense something sinister brewing in the background, especially after the introduction of the "SpyBot 2000" O_o I have no idea why everyone was so excited about those things! They seem invasive and creepy to me.
6. DOES THIS BOOK REMIND YOU OF ANY OTHERS YOU HAVE READ OR ARE YOU FINDING THE STORY FRESH AND ORIGINAL?
At this juncture, it doesn't remind me specifically of anything I've read before. I'm liking it, so far.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS SET 1
WHAT ARE YOUR EXPECTATIONS IN REGARDS TO THIS BOOK AND HOW MUCH OF WHAT HAS HAPPENED IN THE REAL LIFE TECH WORLD DO YOU THINK WILL INFLUENCE THE PLOT LINE OF THE STORY?
I'm really enjoying this book. I think that what has happened in the book, would be something that would happened in real life. I think that what is happening in the book, could be something that might happened in the real life. We already have cameras but I think that we might be smaller cameras just like in the book.
2. INITIAL IMPRESSIONS OF THE MAJOR CHARACTERS MAE AND ANNIE? DO YOU GET THE FEELING THAT THEIR RELATIONSHIP IS NOT AN EQUITABLE ONE AND HOW DO YOU THINK IT MAY CHANGE AS THE STORY PROGRESSES?
When they were first mention in the book, I thought that they were sister in some way, but it looks like Annie was an old friend of Mae and was helping her getting the job at Circle. Yes, I think that their relationship might chance once we get further in the book. I think something might happen between them.
3. DO YOU LIKE THE CONTINUING FORMAT OF THE NOVEL AND THE LACK OF DEFINED CHAPTERS? WHY TO YOU THINK DAVE EGGERS HAS WRITTEN THE BOOK THIS WAY?
This is my second book that has no chapters. My first one was The Road. To me, it's a little confusing since there is really no ending. I'm not sure why Dave Eggers wrote the book like that, but I'm starting to like that kind of way.
4. MAE AND FRANK? WHAT DO YOU THINK FRANK'S CONTRIBUTION TO THE STORY LINE WILL BE? DO YOU SEE ANY RELATIONSHIP EVOLVING BETWEEN THEM?
I think it's kind of early to see if there will be any kind of relationship between them. I feel that Frank is something like a big brother to Mae. I'm not sure what is Frank's contribution is in the book, but it will be interesting to see where it goes.

I think something will be happening later in the book. I think it is too good to be true. I also think that something will happen to Mae and her character.
6. DOES THIS BOOK REMIND YOU OF ANY OTHERS YOU HAVE READ OR ARE YOU FINDING THE STORY FRESH AND ORIGINAL?
I finding the story fresh and original. I can't wait to read some more of the story and to see what will happen.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS SET 1

I finding the story fresh and original. I can't wait to read some more of the story and to see what will happen.

1. WHAT ARE YOUR EXPECTATIONS IN REGARDS TO THIS BOOK AND HOW MUCH OF WHAT HAS HAPPENED IN THE REAL LIFE TECH WORLD DO YOU THINK WILL INFLUENCE THE PLOT LINE OF THE STORY?
I haven't seen much about the Apple Campus (yet), but I've been on the Microsoft campus and there are some striking similarities. And as a visitor, it is really cool and makes you want to work there!
2. INITIAL IMPRESSIONS OF THE MAJOR CHARACTERS MAE AND ANNIE? DO YOU GET THE FEELING THAT THEIR RELATIONSHIP IS NOT AN EQUITABLE ONE AND HOW DO YOU THINK IT MAY CHANGE AS THE STORY PROGRESSES?
Annie seems to have a lot of control/sway over Mae. And frankly, she's a little weird. So...I don't know!
3. DO YOU LIKE THE CONTINUING FORMAT OF THE NOVEL AND THE LACK OF DEFINED CHAPTERS? WHY TO YOU THINK DAVE EGGERS HAS WRITTEN THE BOOK THIS WAY?
I think he wanted just one big flow. Weirdly, the last book I read (by Terry Pratchett) does this same thing - no chapters.
4. MAE AND FRANK? WHAT DO YOU THINK FRANK'S CONTRIBUTION TO THE STORY LINE WILL BE? DO YOU SEE ANY RELATIONSHIP EVOLVING BETWEEN THEM?
There are so many characters at this point that it is hard to say. Although I guess they did give Frank a sympathetic backstory.
I think it is heading towards total invasion of privacy. The cheering at the little cameras was a bit crazy. There is so much potential for misuse - a whole new porn industry watching people have sex for example.
6. DOES THIS BOOK REMIND YOU OF ANY OTHERS YOU HAVE READ OR ARE YOU FINDING THE STORY FRESH AND ORIGINAL?
It feels pretty fresh, but it does remind me of

WHAT ARE YOUR EXPECTATIONS IN REGARDS TO THIS BOOK AND HOW MUCH OF WHAT HAS HAPPENED IN THE REAL LIFE TECH WORLD DO YOU THINK WILL INFLUENCE THE PLOT LINE OF THE STORY?
I expect the book to deal with the technology issues of privacy or rather the lack thereof thanks to the invasive nature of the technology (that camera presentation was creepy). Issues of privacy have been around for a while, so I expect the plot line to draw from what has happened but also exaggerate the capabilities to an extent to make the author's point.
2. INITIAL IMPRESSIONS OF THE MAJOR CHARACTERS MAE AND ANNIE? DO YOU GET THE FEELING THAT THEIR RELATIONSHIP IS NOT AN EQUITABLE ONE AND HOW DO YOU THINK IT MAY CHANGE AS THE STORY PROGRESSES?
Mae seems nice although a bit naive with the typical awe and excitement I would expect from someone just starting her dream job. It bothered me that she was signing employment paperwork without reading it, and her assumption that everyone was trustworthy because it was such an amazing place was beyond naive.
I do not like Annie. Her prank seemed cruel and completely at odds with Mae's perception of her. She seems fairly hung up on her own importance and a die hard company gal.
Annie seems to hold the advantage in the relationship since Mae feels indebted to her for the job, but I feel like Annie could easily turn against her if Mae doesn't conform to her expectations.
3. DO YOU LIKE THE CONTINUING FORMAT OF THE NOVEL AND THE LACK OF DEFINED CHAPTERS? WHY TO YOU THINK DAVE EGGERS HAS WRITTEN THE BOOK THIS WAY?
I prefer chapters and find the lack annoying as it's harder to find a good stopping point. I suppose it mimics the continuous stream of data that flows through the modern world, but I'm not sure the format adds anything to the book.
4. MAE AND FRANK? WHAT DO YOU THINK FRANK'S CONTRIBUTION TO THE STORY LINE WILL BE? DO YOU SEE ANY RELATIONSHIP EVOLVING BETWEEN THEM?
Frank seems both sweet and awkward at times and disturbing at others. I'm not quite sure where he will fit into the story. He definitely seems a bit obsessive about his work. I'm not sure about a relationship because Mae seems to be unsure and Annie does not seem to like him.
Based on the presentation I can't imagine it would take very long for the downsides of the kind of technology being discussed will show up.
6. DOES THIS BOOK REMIND YOU OF ANY OTHERS YOU HAVE READ OR ARE YOU FINDING THE STORY FRESH AND ORIGINAL?
I can't think of any off the top of my head.

WHAT ARE YOUR EXPECTATIONS IN REGARDS TO THIS BOOK AND HOW MUCH OF WHAT HAS HAPPENED IN THE REAL LIFE TECH WORLD DO YOU THINK WILL INFLUENCE THE PLOT LINE OF THE STORY?
I was thinking of Google, and Facebook and Apple etc. as they are known for these kinds of set ups. At this point I don't think there is much originality to the story so I hope we get there soon. There were a few things that I found weird too - like why would Payroll need a physical signature when they are a tech company? Wouldn't they just do that online?
2. INITIAL IMPRESSIONS OF THE MAJOR CHARACTERS MAE AND ANNIE? DO YOU GET THE FEELING THAT THEIR RELATIONSHIP IS NOT AN EQUITABLE ONE AND HOW DO YOU THINK IT MAY CHANGE AS THE STORY PROGRESSES?
This is an interesting dynamic and I'm going to assume that Mae uncovers the "big bad" and needs to decide if it is worth destroying Annie and their friendship over
3. DO YOU LIKE THE CONTINUING FORMAT OF THE NOVEL AND THE LACK OF DEFINED CHAPTERS? WHY TO YOU THINK DAVE EGGERS HAS WRITTEN THE BOOK THIS WAY?
I personally don't like books like this because it is not the way I read (all in one sitting). I love chapters - not just for DQ book breakdowns haha! - but also because as I tend to read snippets here and there it makes it easier for me. for this reason, I ended up downloading the audiobook from audible
4. MAE AND FRANK? WHAT DO YOU THINK FRANK'S CONTRIBUTION TO THE STORY LINE WILL BE? DO YOU SEE ANY RELATIONSHIP EVOLVING BETWEEN THEM?
I like him and I can only assume he will help her with the uncovering of what is really going on
Yes absolutely. Well I think there are lots of existing questions around privacy and ethics with tech companies, and this is taking it one step further with those cameras (although maybe not really when you think of Google glass)
6. DOES THIS BOOK REMIND YOU OF ANY OTHERS YOU HAVE READ OR ARE YOU FINDING THE STORY FRESH AND ORIGINAL?
I guess it is a fictional account of what is already out there. In terms of other stories, it doesn't feel original but I can't put my finger on any in particular - I think it is just the idea of a big corp/govt with lots of data and power being not as altruristic as people may have them beleive - which is not an uncommon plot

WHAT ARE YOUR EXPECTATIONS IN REGARDS TO THIS BOOK AND HOW MUCH OF WHAT HAS HAPPENED IN THE REAL LIFE TECH WORLD DO YOU THINK WILL INFLUENCE THE PLOT LINE OF THE STORY?
Honestly I was a bit hesitant on reading this book because I'm not a fan of the plotline to begin with, but it was so popular so I just had to try it to see what the hype was about.
Has tech really come that far in the past 4 years... like year he keep improving things, but I still feel like our tech isn't nearly as crazy as what the book has. When I read about the tech it makes me think of how in Back to the Future they imagined all this amazing tech that would be created in the future.
2. INITIAL IMPRESSIONS OF THE MAJOR CHARACTERS MAE AND ANNIE? DO YOU GET THE FEELING THAT THEIR RELATIONSHIP IS NOT AN EQUITABLE ONE AND HOW DO YOU THINK IT MAY CHANGE AS THE STORY PROGRESSES?
That prank on Mae in the beginning made me think that Annie isn't that nice of a friend. But after that their relationship seemed close... I guess. I mean they Annie's character is a bit 1-dimensional to me I feel like I don't know her that much so can't get a feel on their relationship. If they are close friends then I imagine Annie as the talkative social one while Mae is the solid quiet one.
3. DO YOU LIKE THE CONTINUING FORMAT OF THE NOVEL AND THE LACK OF DEFINED CHAPTERS? WHY TO YOU THINK DAVE EGGERS HAS WRITTEN THE BOOK THIS WAY?
I don't mind the lack of defined chapters except that for the BOM it makes the separations so awkward. I hate ending at the end of a paragraph I need to keep reading till I see a line break DX I'm sure there's some point in writing it like this but for now I can't figure it out.
4. MAE AND FRANK? WHAT DO YOU THINK FRANK'S CONTRIBUTION TO THE STORY LINE WILL BE? DO YOU SEE ANY RELATIONSHIP EVOLVING BETWEEN THEM?
When I think of Frank I try to put the face to the trailer characters. Is he the one that finds out it's bad and tries to shit it down? We shall see. For now he just seems like a potential love interest.
I already don't like the idea of being watched all the time; it breaks so many privacy laws. Yes you can watch videos, but you can also record private moments and use it for blackmail or public embarrassment. When all the people were in amazement at the 'innovative' new technology I kept screaming in my head 'What about privacy laws!?'
6. DOES THIS BOOK REMIND YOU OF ANY OTHERS YOU HAVE READ OR ARE YOU FINDING THE STORY FRESH AND ORIGINAL?
Not book, but black mirror episodes usually have similar themes of the downside of technology and how it effects our society. (If you like this book I defiantly recommend the series, but suggest you start on season 2 or 3. Season 1 has a great theme, but it really subdued compared to the other eps so people often watch the first one and drop the series.)

1. What are your first impressions of Gina? How do you feel about her session with Mae? This session really bothered me. I wasn't sure if they actually wanted Mae to work, or post on social media all day. "For a company that thrives on order and efficiency, the Circle also seems to endorse—require, even—loose and extravagant socializing. What do these two seemingly opposite values say about what working for them entails? How does Mae’s value set evolve to accommodate these expectations?" (http://www.litlovers.com/reading-guid...)
2. Mae gets pulled into Dan's office for failing to RSVP to Alister's event. What do you think about this conflict between Mae, Alistar and how Dan mediated? [The whole time I was reading this section I was thinking to myself "Are you kidding me? What a baby!"] Do you think The Circlers are forcing new employees to participate in events by singling them out when they don't attend?
3. Mae and Mercer get into an argument regarding their communication. Mae cannot even sit and listen to what Mercer is saying because he "talks so slow". Mercer is frustrated with Mae because she gets all her information from social media instead of speaking directly to him. "Every time I see or hear from you, it's through this filter. You send me inks, you quote someone talking about me, you say you saw a picture of me on someone's wall...It's always a third-party assault. Even when I'm talking to you face to face you're telling me what some stranger thinks of me. It becomes like we're never along. Every time I see you, there's a hundred other people in the room. You're always looking at me through a hundred other people's eyes." How do you think social media has affected the way we communicate with others? How has technology changed our relationships (the quality of our relationships) with other human beings?
4. Mae enjoys kayaking and stops at Marion's kayak rental business on her way home from her parents. She seems very at peace when she's paddling in the bay. When and where do you find solitude? What types of technology are you comfortable invading that space? Josiah and Denise find out May kayaks but doesn't document anything and are appalled. They are even further disgusted when they find out Mae uses a paper pamphlet. They even go as far as questioning her self-esteem. [I found it ironic that they questioned her self-esteem and in turn she felt even worse about herself. "Goddamnit, Mae, give a shit! Be a person of some value to the world."]Are we now expected to document everything we do instead of being in the moment? Is our self worth now dependent on what we "share" with the rest of the world?
5. How do you feel about the medical bracelet the circlers are required to wear? "To Heal We Must Know. To Know We Must Share" is posted in the clinic, do you agree with this motto? Would you wear one of those monitoring bracelets? (I feel like it's a double edge sword.) How much privacy would you be willing to give up for those amazing health care benefits?
6. Mae spots Kalden at the circus event. What do you think of their relationship? I find it odd that Mae cannot find any information on Kalden, given all the resources she has access to. Why do you think Mae is not more zealous on her pursuit of Kalden? Kalden seems to be very secretive. He avoids personal questions, Mae cannot get in touch with him, what do you think he is hiding?

Gina creeped me out. And I thought 'b*****es be crazy' during the entire conversation. And that the company has no concept of the vital importance of the separation between work life and home life. Without a good balance people go insane, which actually likely explains Gina.
I think it shows the Circle wants complete control over their employees without it appearing overt. Meaning they do it through implied rules instead of ones written in a manual or whatever. And it bothers me that Mae bought into that behavior so quickly, although not completely. Though I think part of it is because she doesn't want her 'poor social performance' to reflect badly on Annie.
This whole thing was completely bizarre. Someone needs to give Alistar a bag for his balls. Seriously, WTF was that? From a straight mediation sense Dan did a good job, however, the fact he felt the need to mediate at all was disturbing. I'd tell Alistar to get out of my office and stop wasting my time. And get back to work.
Yes, I think they single people out to pressure them to participate and conform.
How has technology changed our relationships (the quality of our relationships) with other human beings?
I think social media and all of the various new technologies are giving everyone ADD. Seriously, I do. And no patience or appreciation for how long it actually takes to learn and truly understand something. That Google isn't the answer for everything.
And I think it's making us less social instead of more so. We appear more social but its all fake or just on the surface because its all through FB/Twitter/etc. Which puts a barrier between you and whoever you are communicating with whether you realize it or not.
4. Mae enjoys kayaking and stops at Marion's kayak rental business on her way home from her parents. She seems very at peace when she's paddling in the bay. When and where do you find solitude? I find peace either outside in nature or (shocking) reading a book in my comfortable arm chair. Music is about the only technology I don't mind having invade. I do have my phone especially outside, but that is more of a safety thing. The ringer is usually off, but I have it if I need it.
That was another WTF conversation. Wanting a personal life outside of the office doesn't make you a bad person with low self-esteem. It means you have a life that is quite frankly not their business unless it negatively impacts your performance or your actual job.
I agree that to heal something, you have to diagnosis it first. The second sentence though, not so much. There are HIPPA laws for a reason people and trees worth of paperwork you have to sign before the doctor will even leave you a voicemail message with test results.
I honestly don't know if I'd wear the bracelet. I want to say no (with righteous indignation) but I would probably end up wearing it. I'd probably give up more privacy than I'd like to think for that level of health care.
But bi-weekly check-ups seems crazy. If they are monitoring you with the bracelet, why do they need to go in so often? That seems strange too.
It's strange, like everything else in this book. I don't think that's his real name or he's in the system under a different name. Part of me thinks he's the young Wise Man (I can't think of his name right now) in disguise. That idea seems kinda crazy and dumb, but I feel like he's hiding and talking to a newbie because otherwise he'd be recognized.
I'm kinda hoping he throws Mae over his shoulder caveman style and the runs full pelt off the campus, never to look back. She needs to get the hell out of there before people start boiling bunnies.

It's strange, like everything else in this book. I don't think that's his real name or he's in the system under a different name. Part of me thinks he's the young Wise Man (I can't think of his name right now) in disguise. That idea seems kinda crazy and dumb, but I feel like he's hiding and talking to a newbie because otherwise he'd be recognized.
I'm kinda hoping he throws Mae over his shoulder caveman style and the runs full pelt off the campus, never to look back. She needs to get the hell out of there before people start boiling bunnies.

1. What are your first impressions of Gina? How do you fe..."
Judith - LOL...I know Gina was bat-shit crazy!!
You hit the nail on the head for me regarding Kalden. I was thinking the whole time he was someone high up like one the three wise men, but I remembered she saw the picture of them all. So a disguise is a perfect way around that!

That was really creepy. It really goes to show just how much the Circle wants to control. I also find it hard to believe how quickly Mae fell into it and how she has just started accepting everything they say, that she needs to put her whole life out there for every coworker to know.
My main thought while reading all of that conversation was "WTF?", who cares if she went or didnt go to a party? I feel like this goes to show again the control they want to have over their employers and their lives. If you work in the Circle, you live and die in the Circle.
I think Mercer is the most sane character we have met so far, everything he said was true. I think social media has affected our communication with others for sure, even with small things like not asking your friend what he/she did in the weekend because you already saw every one of their activities online. I think social media should not be a place to put every single moment out there, you ARE allowed to keep things to yourself!
I find peace riding my bike, going through peaceful streets with no cars and just listening to the birds and feeling the fresh air. I am obsessed with statistics so I do carry my phone in my bag while riding to track my km/paces/route but thats all it does while I ride.
The whole scene with Josiah and Denise was awful! they really are making her feel like s*** for not posting in social media! I think specially with younger kids that have social media accounts at 7-9 it really does become attached to their self worth and that is just awful.
Its a bit much, they pick up WAY too much info. The motto is creepy like every motto in their company..0 privacy whatsover. I dont know if I would wear one..I do love statistics like I said and checking my steps and heart rate but it would really depend on where that information goes. For my job? I wouldnt. If my hospital were offering and there was more privacy than at the circle then maybe I would say yes.

Why do you think Mae is not more zealous on her pursuit of Kalden? Kalden seems to be very secretive. He avoids personal questions, Mae cannot get in touch with him, what do you think he is hiding?
I have a feeling that he doesnt work there. That maybe he is just trying to get information on how the Circle works to "expose" them or something like that.

--I don't understand how they expect her to do her job AND do all that crazy social media stuff all day. It would definitely drive me bonkers to have to worry about a ranking and keeping track of everyone's messages, especially with whiny people like Alastair!
I did NOT like Gina. She's seriously drinking some major company Koolaid.
--I was completely floored that he had his feelings hurt and had to have an HR/mediation session over it. Seriously? She's brand new and there's a learning curve. GET A GRIP DUDE. It actually made me concerned for her safety... what happens with this guy gets his feelings hurt again? Does he retaliate???
3. Mae and Mercer get into an argument regarding their communication. Mae cannot even sit and listen to what Mercer is saying because he "talks so slow". You're always looking at me through a hundred other people's eyes." How do you think social media has affected the way we communicate with others? How has technology changed our relationships (the quality of our relationships) with other human beings?
--Honestly, this book makes me want to quit social media. I see this weird obsession in the people that I care about, and we communicate more through social media now than outside. And we're all glued to our phones all the time. I'm actually pondering quitting all social media, sans Goodreads, of course ;)
4. Mae enjoys kayaking and stops at Marion's kayak rental business on her way home from her parents. She seems very at peace when she's paddling in the bay. When and where do you find solitude? Is our self worth now dependent on what we "share" with the rest of the world?
--Maybe she doesn't want to share it. Maybe this is her break from the world. Maybe this is her one spot where she likes to be free from the confines and chains of the world and just BE. I was also stunned that they were upset with her for not sharing details of her family medical emergencies. I'm sorry, but during the middle of an emergency, especially when I'm DRIVING two hours, I don't pop on social media. That's just dangerous. This company doesn't respect privacy, and the longer the book goes, the creepier it gets. It's a scary thought that our world could be headed that way.
--I don't mind the bracelet, but being given that sensor in the drink without being told beforehand... serious violation of my body and my rights... I knew when she gave her the drink that it had something in it. I don't get why she's so willing to totally give up everything about herself. I do think the benefits are awesome, but are these results shared with her and her doctors, or with EVERYONE now?
How soon before these cameras are all over where she kayaks, since the company knows she does it and doesn't document... will they send someone out there? And the way this section ends, with her in the room with Francis -- is the room rigged with cameras too? I feel like it is... and like this will be a big mistake to be in there with him.

-- I don't have any proof, just a hunch, but I'm thinking along the same lines as some of the others about his identity. I think he's the guy who started the company.

I agree with the above, Gina and especially the ideas she presented seem crazy! I think it is interesting that there is like a counter thing to track - similar to the Customer Service counter.
2. Mae gets pulled into Dan's office for failing to RSVP to Alister's event. What do you think about this conflict between Mae, Alistar and how Dan mediated? I think people ARE being forced into this whole social support uh...circle. This meeting was just so crazy. And yet....I think about all of the virtual things I get "invited" to - Lipsense "parties", bridal showers, baby showers, etc. Most if not all, I don't participate in. I can see people getting mad about that!
How has technology changed our relationships (the quality of our relationships) with other human beings?I thought Mercer was spot on here - I know a lot of people who don't communicate well at all except through social media.

Is our self worth now dependent on what we "share" with the rest of the world? It makes sense - again with all of the sharing, of COURSE they would expect that documented. With the circle, there is no private time.
5. How do you feel about the medical bracelet the circlers are required to wear? "To Heal We Must Know. To Know We Must Share" is posted in the clinic, do you agree with this motto? I'd probably conform because of the benefits.... sigh =(

Why do you think Mae is not more zealous on her pursuit of Kalden? Kalden seems to be very secretive. He avoids personal questions, Mae cannot get in touch with him, what do you think he is hiding? I have this theory that kalden is one of the big 3. Even though she has seen their pictures, the pictures were weird, so maybe??? Time will tell!

WHAT ARE YOUR EXPECTATIONS IN REGARDS TO THIS BOOK AND HOW MUCH OF WHAT HAS HAPPENED IN THE REAL LIFE TECH WORLD DO YOU THINK WILL INFLUENCE THE PLOT LINE OF THE STORY? I have preconceived ideas about how invasive social media can be.
2. INITIAL IMPRESSIONS OF THE MAJOR CHARACTERS MAE AND ANNIE? DO YOU GET THE FEELING THAT THEIR RELATIONSHIP IS NOT AN EQUITABLE ONE AND HOW DO YOU THINK IT MAY CHANGE AS THE STORY PROGRESSES? Annie seems to have the upper hand in the relationship. Mae isn't as sure of herself.
3. DO YOU LIKE THE CONTINUING FORMAT OF THE NOVEL AND THE LACK OF DEFINED CHAPTERS? WHY TO YOU THINK DAVE EGGERS HAS WRITTEN THE BOOK THIS WAY? No. Maybe he thinks that lack of structure mimics social media posts.
4. MAE AND FRANK? WHAT DO YOU THINK FRANK'S CONTRIBUTION TO THE STORY LINE WILL BE? DO YOU SEE ANY RELATIONSHIP EVOLVING BETWEEN THEM? Could be love interest.
I read reviews, so I do have some idea.
6. DOES THIS BOOK REMIND YOU OF ANY OTHERS YOU HAVE READ OR ARE YOU FINDING THE STORY FRESH AND ORIGINAL? I haven't read anything quite like it since 1984.

Yes, also thought of 1984 and Big Brother

1. Like other people, the description of the campus reminded me a lot of how I have heard the Google campus described. It's supposed to be very idealistic in providing employees with a comfortable community in which to work. But I feel like this has to eventually be shown to contrast with some underlying creepiness. The way they talk about Mae's profile makes me think that the company has no sense of privacy boundaries, and I can see this becoming an issue for Mae. I'm expecting a liberty/privacy vs security issue.
2. Mae seems really bland to me. I can't help but be skeptical of why she got hired, even with connections. Annie seems to have a huge leg up on her career wise. But people seem to be taking to Mae really quickly, and I wonder if she will become the new favorite and if Annie will resent that.
3. The format initially threw me for a loop, but then again, a lot of chapter breaks in some books seem kind of arbitrary. It makes sense to just break the book into scene transitions like this, it just makes it harder to communicate where you are in the book. I'm still not 100% sure if I've passed the day 1 stopping point or not.
4. It seems like Mae and Frank are headed toward a relationship, but to be honest I'm not feeling the chemistry there.
5. I definitely think this is too good to be true. Like I referred to in #1, I think the company is set up in a way such that they are want to be pervasive in people's lives -- not just their own employees, but everyone. I personally think that it's already creepy, and is only going to get creepier.
6. It's a different viewpoint, but not new. I think the freshest thing about it so far is starting out trying to show the reader something that may look idyllic. But I'm pretty sure this is going to be in part a story about the panopticon and widespread surveillance, an idea which is in many other books, including 1984 as an old example and Little Brother by Cory Doctrow as a newer piece.

I do not like Gina. She seems pretty high and mighty and the way she talked to Mae was just rude. I would have gotten fired from that company. When I go to work, I'm there to work, not play around on social media. I understand that the company is pretty much built on and around social media, but there is a time and a place. And to make it seem like it's evaluated as part of your job performance? That's insane.
Oh my goooooood, Alister! I rolled my eyes so many times when I was reading that scene. Who almost cries because someone he doesn't even know didn't go to his party?! There was absolutely no need for that conversation to happen, especially with a boss present, and I think Dan just made it worse. Of course, Dan is a company man and the company is all about being social, so he was just doing his job. I understand wanting new people to feel welcome, but making team participation mandatory sounds awful. Not everyone is social and, if you force them to be, it will probably negatively affect them and their job performance.
How has technology changed our relationships (the quality of our relationships) with other human beings?
I was totally on Mercer's side during that conversation. Though I don't think social media is inherently bad, I do think that it can affect people's interactions if they overuse it. Not everything a person does needs to be Tweeted or put on Facebook. There is such a thing as oversharing... Also, she was being crazy rude to him through that whole conversation. I get that he is her ex. I get that she was a little peeved at her parents for painting him as some big hero. Honestly, I probably would have been a little annoyed, myself. But I also would have appreciated the fact that he was there in a (at the time) emergency when I couldn't be. At least try and be civil?
4. Mae enjoys kayaking and stops at Marion's kayak rental business on her way home from her parents. She seems very at peace when she's paddling in the bay. When and where do you find solitude? Edit: I forgot to answer the first part of this question =X
If I want solitude and to unplug, I go somewhere in nature, like to a park or just outside, and go for a hike. Either that, or I'll hide in my bedroom with a book, lol. I do usually have my phone with me, but it's mostly just so I know what time it is and if there's an emergency. I do have kids, so you never know.
That conversation made me cringe more than the one with Alister, ugh. They were just so condescending! I do feel like people tend to feel the need to document occasions and activities instead of just enjoying them. People did it back when there was no social media, but not nearly to the same extent. I even catch myself becoming more concerned with getting a video of my kids opening presents than just sharing in their joy of the moment. Part of it is being separated from family and wanting them to experience the moment, as well. But I certainly don't actually think that our self worth is connected to how much we share online.
I actually kind of like the medical bracelets... Of course, I work in the medical field, so I just find them fascinating! And to get one for free?! Sign me up! The medical field has some pretty strict privacy laws, so I would be okay with it monitoring all of my bodily functions cause, in theory, the only person see it should be my doctor and anyone actively involved in my medical care. Of course, with The Circle, it's probably all on the cloud, and I would not be okay with that at all.
I like Kalden. He's weird and nothing like the other people that work at The Circle. Actually, I don't think he does work there. I think Annie may actually be on to something thinking that he is a spy. I don't think he's a spy in the sense that he's trying to steal trade secrets, though. I think he's trying to get dirt on The Circle. Like an investigative reporter or something like that. I'm not sure if Mae really has a relationship with him, other than obsession. Feelings are weird in your twenties...

Synopsis:
When Mae Holland is hired to work for the Circle, the world’s most powerful internet company, she feels she’s been given the opportunity of a lifetime. The Circle, run out of a sprawling California campus, links users’ personal emails, social media, banking, and purchasing with their universal operating system, resulting in one online identity and a new age of civility and transparency.
As Mae tours the open-plan office spaces, the towering glass dining facilities, the cozy dorms for those who spend nights at work, she is thrilled with the company’s modernity and activity. There are parties that last through the night, there are famous musicians playing on the lawn, there are athletic activities and clubs and brunches, and even an aquarium of rare fish retrieved from the Marianas Trench by the CEO.
Mae can’t believe her luck, her great fortune to work for the most influential company in America - even as life beyond the campus grows distant, even as a strange encounter with a colleague leaves her shaken, even as her role at the Circle becomes increasingly public. What begins as the captivating story of one woman’s ambition and idealism soon becomes a heart-racing novel of suspense, raising questions about memory, history, privacy, democracy, and the limits of human knowledge
