Sparrowlicious There's a 'recommendation' section on Goodreads where you can ask other readers for their recommendations. Mostly you'll probably see your friends answer but if you phrase it right you'll also get recommendations from strangers.
Here:
https://www.goodreads.com/recommendat...

So no, you don't need to start a forum topic with a book to go with. ;)

Lauren THE BOOK THIEF YES

Nadia Cruel Beauty
and if you're into classics: Eugénie Grandet

there is a section for personal recommendations - you can say, i'm looking for a book that is a YA stand-alone with your other requirements and GR members (not just your friends) can provide recommendations

Sonia Hernandez Out of my Mind by Sharon M. Draper. I cried reading this book. The book is aim to a pre teen age group, but the story is so wonderful, sad, courageous, disppointing and loving.

Sonia Hernandez The Book Thief is also a wonderful story.

Drew A Monster Calls – a BRILLIANT middle grade psychological contemporary book.

Fangirl – About a shy "fangirl" Cath who starts college and writes fanfiction in her spare time (it does have quite a bit of cursing in it).

The Book Thief – WWII; I've noticed people have already recommended this, and it's definitely worth the read.

The One and Only Ivan – A sweet and sad middle grade contemporary novel about a small circus Gorilla with a big heart. It turned out to be ten times better than I expected it to be!

Cruel Beauty – A fantasy retelling of Beauty and the Beast; but this time Ignifex (er, Beast) is gorgeous and a DEMON.

Peter Nimble and His Fantastic Eyes – A super-fun fantasy middle grade standalone.

The Thief Lord – A thought-provoking light YA fantasy twist on Peter Pan: What if a child was the opposite of Peter, and all he wanted to do was grow up?

Wintergirls – A slightly disturbing look into a girl who has anorexia's life (it does have one strong curse word).

Hope that was helpful. I either loved or really enjoyed all of these, and most of them are pretty clean (with the exception of Fangirl—but that's super sweet and fluffy and I'd suggest at least giving it a try).

message 20: by Stephanie (last edited Jun 11, 2014 05:59PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Stephanie Holt Remarkable Creatures by Tracy Chevalier

Where'd You Go Bernadette by Maria Semple

The Problem With Murmur Lee by Connie May Fowler

The Life of Pi by Yann Martel

Logan It depends on what genre of stand-a-lone you are looking for.

Me & Earl & The Dying Girl- If you Like books like the Fault In Our Stars

Since You've Been Gone by Morgan Matson- If you like summery reads

Don't Look Back by Jennifer L Armentrout- if you like suspense

The Book Thief- If you really want to have a book with feels.

Hannah Lee I think this is a stand alone:
Sophie's World by Jostein Gaardner (it really is spelled like that!)

message 23: by Max (new) - added it

Max The Time Keeper by Mitch Albom-It makes you think

A Dog's Purpose by W. Bruce Cameron-It does have a sequel, but it's definitely readable as a stand-alone

The Princess Bride by William Goldman-One of my personal favorites

Jackie The Help - Kathryn Stockett
Great hist. fiction with voice, humor, and feeling.

Mockingbird - Katherine Erskine
Humbling story about Asperger's, cute yet emotional.

Sold - Patricia McCormick
A heavier read- do not attempt if you can't handle the subject of human trafficking.

Water for Elephants - Sara Gruen
One of my favorite books EVER.

And lastly, anything by Laurie Halse Anderson or Jodi Picoult.

Anastasia Nadya wrote: "The Truth About Forever (if you're into teenage romance stuff)

The Princess Bride (if you're looking for some LOLs)"

There are a few editions of The Princess Bride coming up on Goodreads. Which is the one you are referring to?

Robyne After the Golden Age-There is another book with a minor character from this book but I wouldn't consider it a series.
These Broken Stars-There are more books coming out in the same universe as this one but it's not going to have the same characters.
Attachments
The End Games
Code Name Verity-There is another book in this same universe but I don't think any of the characters crossover.
The Night Circus
Before I Go To Sleep
Hate List
Before I Fall
I've Got Your Number

All were favorites of mine and are definitely not series. I too am not always a fan of series and like to read a good stand-alone. Thanks for starting this group. I'm getting a lot of good ideas of what to read next.
