Review:

Paulsen’s sequel to perhaps his most famous book Hatchet continues the story after Brian’s rescue. Brian, who was forced to live in the forest as a child with nothing but a hatchet, finds that his experience in the woods has changed him for good. He is no longer the average teenager, but a boy who is inseparably connected to the wild. After a violent encounter with a high school bully, Brian decides that he can only belong to one world: the wilderness. Back tracking his steps, he then begins another journey of survival, one that will remind him of the respect and love he grew for nature, and perhaps allow him to calm the animal inside.

The book engages readers, and especially those who are fans of Paulsen’s first book Hatchet. It remains true to its style and analyzes (even Romanticizes) man’s connection with nature. This is an excellent read for older children and younger adults, but the fact that I have read Hatchet makes the story all the more readable.
