Kylee Postell I think the theme of this story is "Appreciate what you have in life because it might not be there forever." I chose this as my theme because on page 5 when Surlik lost his mother he was later upset for not paying closer attention and he feels like if he was he would still be with her. I Also chose this because on page 82 when the bully called surlik a "Yid". This was when surlik was pretending to not be a jew and went and lived and worked for a family but one day he went to play and they were having a contest that later revealed something about surlik showing he was a jew. This put the family he was staying with in danger and they got angry and surlik ran away and was once again on his own, I chose this because surlik was taking what he had for granted and was doing what he knew he shouldn't and he later put himself and others in danger for it. I mainly chose this because he was very upset after the incident happened and he said on page 83 it stated " He looked sadly at the houses of the village. He had thought that he has at last found a farmer to stay with until the end of the war"
