I think the theme of the story is that you should always look for the good things in a bad situation. I think this because Daisy is thrown into a new place by her dad and stepmom and has to make it a positive experience. At the same time, she has to deal with the war which her aunt is involved. They make good out of it for a while until she has to be separated from her cousins. She finds positive things in her life despite the fact that she is moved around without her things and the only thing she has left with her is her little cousin
