Hey there. Would Two Turns From Zero: Pushing to Higher Fitness Goals--Converting Them to Life Strength be ok for book 3 (autobiography/memoir? The first part of the book is all about the author's early life and experiences and how she evolved. In the second part, it looks like she weaves her experiences in with advice, etc.

Unfortunately that doesn't work for the autobiography / memoir category.

Option 1 Tasks from first challenge 5.7 - something thankful for
I am thankful for my health and the health service
can i use
My Name Is Lucy Barton
as in this book Lucy is in hospital for a long period I have spent periods of time in hospital and I am thankful for my health and the health service

That could work if the health care she receives is part of the book. Explain it when you post.

Will you accept Undaunted Courage: The Pioneering First Mission to Explore America's Wild Frontier as a book taking place within 200 miles of Kansas City, MO? Most of the action happens while they are traveling the Missouri river and in St. Louis which is within 200 miles...
Back to the drawing board because my first pick is shelved as a children's book. I'm going to read In the Time of the Butterflies, which takes place in multiple cities within the Dominican Republic - it's been a while since I read it, but I believe it's two or three. How would you like that noted when it comes to figuring out the distance? Should I go with the city that it's mostly based in or note the distance for the other cities as well?
for LA - epistolary novel - can you confirm Lady Susan please? It's not mentioned as epistolary in the blurb, but several reviews do confirm it, and it's on the Epistolary Fiction list: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/3...
Thanks!
For LA - epistolary novel - can you confirm Across a Billion Years? The blurb states:"A brother's "message cubes" to his twin sister relate the unusual adventures of the archaeological expedition he accompanies into space in the twenty-fourth century. "
I'm reading the novel now. Each "message cube" is a letter to his sister, dated at the top of the "cube" and reading like a letter.
The novel is not on any of the Epistolary Fiction lists.
Thanks!
Dee wrote: "blergh - the only problem being born in the middle of nowhere Australia - finding books set there/authors from 200 miles is hard!"OMG, after all this time... I didn't you you were born in AU!! :O
For Option 1: 10 points task: 2. On October 31st, 1993, River Phoenix Dies From A Drug Overdose - In Memory Of This Actor Who Died Before His Time; Read A Novel With A Character Who Suffers From An Addiction Or A Non-Fiction Book About Addiction (Such As A Memoir Of A Recovering Addict).
Would Miles from Nowhere by Nami Mun work? The last sentence of the GR description notes, "Joon's adolescent years take her from a homeless shelter to an escort club, through struggles with addiction, to jobs selling newspapers and cosmetics, committing petty crimes, and finally toward something resembling hope." I'm not sure how much of the book is on 'struggles with addiction'...
Dee wrote: "blergh - the only problem being born in the middle of nowhere Australia - finding books set there/authors from 200 miles is hard!"Replace Australia with Canada and I'm in the same boat. :D Fortunately that distance calculator is not even close on distances around me, so if it thinks that White Dog is less than 200 miles away, who am I to argue? Now I just have to prove that my author was born there - his biographies just mention him living in BC which is much further than 200 miles away. Research mode!
Jenny wrote: "Will you accept Undaunted Courage: The Pioneering First Mission to Explore America's Wild Frontier as a book taking place within 200 miles of Kansas City, MO? Most of the action happen..."Hi Jenny, the task requires you to post the straight line distance from your birthplace and I'm not sure that will work if the action is taking place on a river. If at least 50% is set in St Louis that will be fine, but otherwise I can't see how this would work. Sorry!
Sally wrote: "Back to the drawing board because my first pick is shelved as a children's book. I'm going to read In the Time of the Butterflies, which takes place in multiple cities within the Dom..."
Sorry the other book didn't work out - Goodreads genres are so frustrating sometimes!
If at least 50% takes place in one city then you can just quote the straight line distance to that city. If not the quote the straight line distance to two cities that in total are the setting for at least 50% of the plot. Hope that works.

That looks like a perfect fit for the task, Catherine. Happy reading! I may add that to my TBR list too, looks like a fun read.

I couldn't see any reference to the format in the GR description, but I think the reviews make it clear enough that it's an epistolary novel, so that works fine for the task. Happy reading!
Catherine wrote: "I've read it already - it was fun! Highly recommend it :) Thanks, I will definitely read it then. I love how many new books I've added to my TBR from recommendations in this group. :-)

Thanks so much!
For Book 2, I was born in Independence Missouri which is within 200 miles of Kansas City Missouri, so I could use a book written by William Least Heat-Moon who was born in Kansas City, Missouri. Is this correct?
Andy wrote: "For Book 2, I was born in Independence Missouri which is within 200 miles of Kansas City Missouri, so I could use a book written by William Least Heat-Moon who was born in Kansas C..."That works Andy, just make sure you state that you're using the author's birthplace option and give the straight line distance between his birthplace and yours when you post. Enjoy the book!
Thanks, Kansas City and Independence are only 8 miles apart. I guess I could walk it, but at the time I was an infant so didn't do much walking.Andy
Me again. Sorry. Keep changing my mind on what to read for this task. For option 2, I'm now wondering about Ashes of the Elements. Hawkenlye Abbey is fictional, but the GR description of the first one in the series (Fortune Like the Moon) specifies: "AUTHORBIO: ALYS CLARE lives in Tonbridge, England, in the area where Fortune Like The Moon is set. This is the first in a series of medieval mysteries set in the Weald of Kent. (less)".
The description of the one I want to read specifically mentions Wealden Forest which is a real place (57.92 miles from where I was born, in fact!).
Is that specific enough for "The book's setting must be a real place found on a map."
Trish wrote: "Me again. Sorry. Keep changing my mind on what to read for this task. For option 2, I'm now wondering about Ashes of the Elements. Hawkenlye Abbey is fictional, but the GR descript..."
It looks like the author was born in Cambridge. If your birthplace is close to Wealden Forest then is it possible Cambridge is within a 200 mile radius? If so then you could use the option relating to the author's birthplace rather than the book setting.

Good thinking. If she was born in Cambridge, then that's certainly within 200 miles of my birthplace.
For book 1, Task 10.10 (Read a book that has a cat on the cover), would this cover work? There's a cat sitting on the woman's right shoulder.

Bookwrm526For book 1, I wanted to do task 10.7 to read a book about a hero/heroine, but I wanted to make sure this one would qualify. Nettie Lonesome has become a mysterious figure called The Shadow, and her job is "to kill what needs killing" - in this installment that is to kill a powerful alchemist who is taking magical creatures hostage and using them to extend his life. Along the way, she also saves a few other people even though she is reluctant to get involved. Conspiracy of Ravens by Lila Bowen.

Can you explain how it works using this definition? One "who exhibits extraordinary bravery, firmness, fortitude or greatness of soul, in any course of action, or in connection with any pursuit, work, or enterprise."
You say her actions are "her job"- is it "extraordinary" or just what she does? "even though she is reluctant to get involved. " is that "greatness of soul"?
You would have to explain it.

Hmm, let's see if I can! The Shadow is more of a calling, though s/he describes it as a job. S/he feels a pull, almost a compulsion, to do these things, because it's the right thing to do, the thing that needs doing. S/he's very brave, and puts her own life on the line killing the monsters (or alchemists, or witches, etc.). I think it shows greatness of soul and great fortitude because s/he often has to give up (or thinks s/he does) the things she wants in life in order to pursue and dispose of the targets, and the thing that needs killing is quite often hurting vulnerable or innocent people.

I would like to verify Cheri Huber as being 'born' within 200 miles of me. I cannot find the exact place of birth but her biography on wiki mentions the same area I grew up throughout all her life 'events.' All of the mentioned locations, including her current are within range."She was raised in the San Francisco Bay area"
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheri_H...
I did not find any birth info on her website either.
Thanks for letting me know.
Sorry for keeping you waiting Justme! I think in order to be consistent and fair to other readers, I'd have to say you need a reference stating the author's birthplace rather than where they were raised. Sorry I know that won't be the answer you wanted.
Just had to give it a try because I wanted to move something around. It can get challenging to get those last few to fit!
Hi, I'd like to use this author... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Ma...But I cannot find any reference that says what town he was born (only the state). Can I use the place where it says he spent his childhood (Kyneton, Victoria)?

Sorry Meg, but to be consistent and fair to other readers, I'll have to say you'd need to find out where the author was born rather than where he spent his childhood. Sorry!
Thought you might say that! I'm pretty sure he was born there, but can't find any websites that confirm it. I thought the internet knew everything about everyone, lol! Thanks anyway
The only reference I can find to Natashia Deon's birthplace is in this interview where she is asked about being born in Los Angeles. Will that count?
